I have owned my ATV1 for a few years and am happy with it. Just got ATV2 for Christmas and am thinking I should Jailbreak one of them and install ATVFlash. Would like to be able to use XBMC and/or Plex as well as a browser.

Any opinions on whether one is better with ATVFlash than the other?

Thanks!

Why would you limit yourself to only jailbreaking one of them?

Yes, I could jailbreak both of them. I guess my question is more about the capabilities of AppleTV1 vs. AppleTV2 after jailbreaking and installing something like ATV Flash.

As I use my AppleTV1 for a lot of home media stuff (music, photos, movies) I am inclined to leave it alone so no need for constant maintenance or risk of crashing from unauthorized software. I thought I would use the ATV2 as my "testbed" for all of the new stuff.

So wanted to ask some of the pros on the board here what they do with their jailbroken ATVs and see if there is stuff that can be done on ATV1 vs ATV2.

Sorry if I am not being clear and thanks for any feedback.

i jailbroke my new atv2 using seas0npass and install ATV black, it is rock solid, and gives much better functionality. There is no reason not to do it now an untethered jailbreak is out for 4.4.4.

Thanks - I have been all through the Firecore site. Not trying to be lazy, here, either. Just looking for tips that might not be obvious; ways that people are using atV Flash on either atv1 or atv2 that might not be too obvious and used by the more experienced people on the board.

Thanks!

Well, the ATV Flash for the two different ATV:s pretty much activate all that can be activated, then it's up to you how you want to use it.

Although, what you can do with the ATV1 is to install OS X on it and use it as a iTunes server, then expand the storage space as much as you like with external USB drives.

I've both my AppleTVs "modified".

The ATV1 has a CrystalHD card installed and is running Crystalbuntu, an AppleTV specific linux install, which runs XBMC.

The ATV2 is jailbroken and also running XBMC.

ATVFlash is paying $30 something that is free - 5 minutes in Google will show you how to do it yourself with nothing but a USB stick for the ATV1 and a microUSB lead for the ATV2.

I have a setup similar to HellDriverUK, though I run Plex on my :apple:TV2. Though I love the Plex interface, I get lots of judder when playing 1080p content. If you have lots of 1080p media (or any that you want to enjoy, for that matter) you may want to install the Broadcom CrystalHD card in your :apple:TV1 and use Crystalbuntu running XBMC. It's a fantastic experience and plays even high bitrate 1080p content with aplomb.

@OmegaRed1723, HellDiverUK and hafr - Thanks for this info. This is what I was hoping for from the user community! I think I will start by Jailbraking my AppleTV2.

If I understand correctly, HelldiverUK recommends using ATV2 for XBMC, which I can download for free. I was thinking of aTVFlash for the browser and the other stuff, but maybe I don't need it? I can start with baby steps.

Thanks for the tips so far and keep 'em coming!

And if you have an iPad or iPhone, a plus to JB'ng the Apple TV 1 is to give it Airplay capability (both audio AND video)...Google "RemoteHD".

the atv flash black media server has a good interface but it is to slow to open folders, Xbmc is really good but easily installed for free, paying the 30 is a waste and i regret it, the browser is slow also
