I am looking into Jailbreaking my iPhone 3G and I have watched the iClarify tutorial so I pretty well know how to do it, but I would really like some advice as to whether I should or not.

A couple questions I have....

What are the benefits?

Is it worth it?

Will Apple be able to tell I did it after restoring back to iPhone Software in the event of a problem?

I am mainly interested in using it for themes and customization, so the fact that there are similar applications in the App Store is irrelevant to my decision. Any help/replies are greatly appreciated!! Thanks! :)

All of those topics have been beaten to death around here. Do some reading around in this section and you'll find your answers.

Good things

  • Add cut+paste (buggy)
  • Video recording
  • Better camera app
  • MMS (with some effort)
  • Great UI tweaks
  • Other great apps apple won't allow
  • Unlocking

Bad things

  • Buggy
  • Slows stuff down
  • Voids warranty (fix with restore)

I say it is definitely worth it.

^You forgot aestheticlly pleasing under 'Good Things' :p

You can individualize your phone to your hearts content, I've never had a phone that felt so...mine...before

why do you even want to if you have no idea what it provides? if you're happy with your iphone then don't bother.

Well I do know that it provides a ton of customization which is the main reason why I am considering doing it because I am a bit tired of the rigidity of the current iPhone software with regards to customization.

Those could be debated. The bugginess will only come from things you've installed, that goes for slowing the phone down also. And it's not necessarily true about voiding the warranty, only SOME Apple stores are refusing service to JB Phones. They're also turning a blind eye, and claimed they will not pursue or purposely 'mess up' tempered devices. :)

Last time I checked, my local Genius Bar has a flyer posted saying that they cannot service jailbroken phones and that they are out of warranty. I'm not denying that some stores are servicing them, I just saying that the warranty is void if you jailbreak your iPhone.

Don't forget these:
  • Landscape view SMS
  • emoji (emoticons) in SMS & Email
  • a cool NES emulator
  • multitasking,
  • data connection tethering with a laptop
  • allowing video streaming apps like Ustream / Youtube to use 3G instead of being limited to WiFi only
  • removing (annoying) 10MB download cap for mobile iTunes over 3G

Definitely worth it for me too.
