I really just want to jailbreak so that I can use tethering w/ AT&T. Is it worth it?

I am pretty clueless on all the advantages/disadvantages. I see that thread pinned at the top if I choose to do it...It makes it look pretty easy.

I currently have a 3.0.1 iPhone 3g that was given to me by my company and is paid for by them.

it is worth it and it is very easy. I would recommend waiting until 3.1 has been jailbroken and then do it. just keep watching these boards and you'll know when it's ready.

If you are willing to be self sufficient to solve your problems with the phone if you run into any, then yes I would recommend it. Like the above person said keep your eyes here on the official jailbreak blog to see when the 3.1 jailbreak is released.

Thanks for the advice, guys.

I haven't updated to 3.1 quite yet...Should I just hold off updating to that and go ahead and jailbreak while I'm at 3.0.1?

You can go ahead and jaibreak, but know that you will have to re-jailbreak when you upgrade to 3.1 after the new tools come out. There are packages that will help you reinstall your previous jailbroken apps, though, so it's not a big deal.

Please note: if the instructions you use tell you to perform a restore before jailbreaking, skip that step. Just run redsn0w and jailbreak using the 3.0 firmware (you have to point it to the 3.0 firmware, but it will jailbreak your 3.0.1 firmware).

Thanks guys, very helpful. Sorry I am such a newb about this stuff...dumb questions.

I will go ahead and do the 3.0 jailbreak and I guess I'll just re-do it when I upgrade to 3.1. Actually another ? about that...When I upgrade to 3.1 through iTunes, does it "unjailbreak" the phone? Is that why I'd have to do it again?

Do not upgrade through iTunes. Upgrading through iTunes will upgrade your baseband, making it impossible to unlock your iPhone in the future. You need to wait until the Dev Team releases specific tools to allow you to upgrade to 3.1 without locking your iPhone to AT&T forever.

Also, do not restore using iTunes unless you are careful to shift (or alt) restore and choose the older 3.0.1 firmware, for the same reasons.

You don't need to jailbreak to get tethering to work. Go to help.benm.at (in safari) to get the info. You just download a file and your good to go. This works with 3.0 & 3.01, he is working on a file for 3.1.

But, after jailbreaking mine, it is well worth it :) The same tethering file works whether is is jailbroken or not
