I have an iphone 3g with the latest firmware 3.1.2 and my warranty is done. I have heard some good things about jailbreaking and was wondering if i should do it and what the best/safest way to do it is.

go to blackra1n.com, and click the apple or windows logo, which ever one you have, then open it up and click make it ra1n. now your iphone is jailbroken whoopie! now go search this site for things to do on it.

go to youtube

search jailbreak, cydia, jailbreal apps, winterboards, themes etc then you decide and Iclarified has the best tutorial on jb. in other words do you your own reading and research and then decide if it's for you.

My biggest piece of advice is not to just download blackra1n and jailbreak. Read all the sticky threads at the top of this page, read up on jailbreaking and what it actually does to your phone. Don't proceed until you feel like you understand why you're doing what you're doing. Believe me, short cuts make long delays.

I just un-jailbroke my iPhone 3G after being jailbroken since August of 2009.

I jailbroke originally for 3 reasons: Cycorder (video recording), GV Mobile (for Google Voice), and Backgrounder (to run apps in the background).

Once Qik was released in the app store, and I learned VoiceCentral was being re-released as a web app soon, and since the iPhone 3G doesn't really work well with multiple apps running, I decided to go back to regular firmware.

I am glad I did. I had been suffering from self-assigned IP addresses on all of my Macs and iPhones for months and I didn't know why. Not until I un-jailbroke my phone did I put two and two together and realize that the iPhone was the problem.

There are a few things I miss. I miss the 5 icon dock, SBSettings, and Status Notifer, but none of those things are worth the pain of the self assigned IP Address problem I lived with for 6 months.

I also had no desire at all to use any themes, so that wasn't an issue for me.

If you use Apple routers like I do, I recommend against it because of the self assigned IP address problem. If you don't, or you want to see if you don't get that problem, then by all means give it a shot. It is very easy to do and there are several good utilities in Cydia. But you should know, that just like the app store, the majority of apps in Cydia are crap as well.

I jailbroke my iphone a couple months after I got it, ran into a snag and had to restore it when the firmware update came out and haven't had a chance to re-hack. I've been thinking about running pwnage on it again a lot lately as having a jb phone does have many many perks. 5 icon dock is huge-don't know why but that extra icon is just like a flag of freedom always there in front of you! Themes are great as well, and the specific app themes are icing on the cake. Video recording is another great ability, as well as running simultaneous apps, although I haven't used the latter as I have a 3G and I have read it's not worth it without the good ol' 3GS. I think I probably will end up hacking again, and if you decide to you should also know it's not always a seamless process, and there is a distinct possibility you will run into a hangup at sometime with your hacked phone. There will always be a way to restore your phone to factory settings if need be, and you will not end up with a brick, but just know that the hassle of restoring all the contents of your phone is the price you may have to pay if things get screwy.

The fact that you're asking for advice rather than doing your own research tells me that no, you should not jailbreak.

Jailbreaking = FUD

My biggest piece of advice is not to just download blackra1n and jailbreak. Read all the sticky threads at the top of this page, read up on jailbreaking and what it actually does to your phone. Lots of FUD in this thread.

The actual act of Jailbreaking your phone does NOT change anyway how your phone operates.

The problem is noobs installing everything they see on Cydia and then getting pissed when the phone crashes or lags or has connectivity problems.

First thing noobs do after jailbreaking is install WinterBoard to put 1337 themes on the phones (hey I did the same thing), then they put SBSettings and start fracking around with the OS. Then the slowdowns occur and they get pissed.

I have Cycorder, FlashLight (best flashlight than ANY of the app store ones), MxTube and AppSync *cough* for *testing* my personal iphone apps.

And my iPhone 3G works just the same as my wife's non-jailbroken iPhone.

NO!, don't do it! It's the devil
