I really don't have anything else to say. The topic says it all :p

EDIT - I would plan to use it as a full time iPod as well as a phone so I guess the real question to ask is should I get the iPhone or wait for the 6th gen iPod. (I just lost my 5 gen iPod and I am really missing my music :(
)

I think that depends on how bad you want it. Even though the rumor is that the UK 3G version is coming in the 4th quarter doesn't mean its going to come to the US anytime soon. Here is my honest opinion about the phone:

It is beautiful. Probably the sexiest device that has come out to date in any electronic arena. It does what it's advertised to do and doesn't do what has been advertised it doesn't do. There are a few little quirks that it has that users are finding out (which you can read all about in the forums here). My only major complaint is it doesn't work as well with my Alpine car audio setup as my nano does.

aside from 3g and a larger storage capacity, i don't think there's anything a version 2 could offer that a good software update can't. living with 8 gb and edge the past few days made me realize that 3g isn't mandatory, and i can definitely survive on 8 gb. i've got 550 songs, 3 tv shows, 2 movies, 350 pictures, two email accounts and 2 gb left over. i'm very glad i purchased this phone. if you haven't seen one in person, i suggest you go to the nearest apple store and check one out. it may convince you one way or the other.

Does it work fine as a full time phone as well as a iPod?

the phone is AWESOME. I really love it. The iPod portion is great as a stand alone iPod. I think you will have varying results in the car depending on how you listen in the car. I have a whole Alpine setup with a direct interface and while it will work fine if I put it in Airplane Mode, I get static through my stereo when it sends/receives emails or cdalls come in or I make calls.

From what I've seen of my battery life, using an iPhone as a main iPod is not a great idea. The iPhone really is a phone with iPod capabilities. It's a fantastic phone (though needs some tweaks, of course). If you are in the market for a phone go for it. But if you are really looking for an iPod, then wait for the 6G iPod. You won't be happy with the iPhone.

of 2007?

Anyone think that the iPhone 2.0 will be the most amazing phone ever?

BTW, in TIME magazine, they made a mock up of what the iPhone 2.0 would look like, they made it platinum, and it looks good!

Anyone have a scan?

Version 1 will see firmware updates for 2 years. Version 2 is coming in 2 years.

i really don't think a version 2 of the iphone will come to the us for at least a year.

I am not so sure. . if Apple is going to stay a player in the phone business they must keep up. The Iphone is great and they certainly have the lead in every major category - including price. However, the competitors will come out with a phone BY CHRISTMAS that does much of what the IPhone does, though not as nice (IMO) and I think they will have the typical pricing model in the US - free (or near free) for the device. This will grab MANY customers. Apple has to keep updating.

I have read many posts of wishful thinking that Apple will not 'alienate' early adopters by releasing a major upgrade too soon. . hugh?! Have these people not seen how Apple operates? They have your money as early adopters now they need new clients and will not hold back new features.

With this said, I think that Apple will have a fairly major upgrade by Christmas - GPS, 16 & 32GB as the low/high end and a few other things. . .

There will always be something better. Depends on whether you want to start enjoying this product now, or 6 mo to a year from now. As the iPhone sits now, it is far beyond anything likely to show up in the market for some time. Yes, there are a few things people think are missing, but the pluses greatly outweigh the minuses.

Here's the really revolutionary thing about the iphone. The hardware will never change much, it's a giant screen. The whole phone is software. Yes obviously they will make improvments with battery and storage. But largley the core of the phone can be updated simply with software. And here's what s supposed to be coming:

Why wait. Seems like iphone 2.0 is already on the way. And by seeing how easy this is to update, and move forward, i think you should just get it.

i don't think capacity will grow to 16/32 gb in the next iteration. 32 gb flash chips are still too expensive to put into the iphone. we might see 8/16 gb, but i don't think we'll see much higher than that. either way, i still think updates won't come for at least a year. look at the fifth generation ipod. how long has that been around? while i'm sure they delayed a sixth generation release to avoid stealing the iphone's thunder, apple's product releases seem to be coming fewer and farther between. and apple isn't one to release new products based on what the competition is doing, especially not when they think their software is "at least five years ahead" of anything else on the market. but, who knows? we'll see in the coming months.

If you adopt this way of thinking your never going to get one...There will always be something new...Just go for it if it fits your needs...If you have to think about it then its probably not right for you

Get it, its an amazing stand alone ipod and stand alone phone. You wont regret the purchase especially since we wont see version two for quite sometime. This thing is simply beautiful!

P.S. Im posting from my iphone now!

+1

I agree whole heartedly. If I've learned anything from my rabid following of Apple, it is that they love to update new products a few months after they are released. Look at the AppleTV... the 160GB was released just a few months after it was first released. The Macbooks got bumped from CoreDuo to Core2Duo pretty darn quick, too (I know because I got burned by that upgrade). Something new and better is always going to come out, of course, but I think with the iPhone I'm gonna wait it out until around Christmas and see what else Apple has in store for us before deciding.

Couple things to consider

The iPhone is my first smart phone, so some of the text entry issues (small keyboard) aren't a problem for me as I had nothing to compare it with. The timing worked out perfectly for me-my contract was up and I had been waiting for this kind of functionality wrapped up with an Apple bow. I'm not disappointed.

That said, I won't be getting rid of my 30 gb iPod any time soon. I like to manage music manually, since my library lives on an older iMac, and I sync my iPhone from a PowerBook. This adds a couple extra steps to the process for me since iPhone only syncs playlists from the primary computer.

the Ipod of the Iphone is the best of ipod of all
excellent battery life
super screen
need i mention more?

I agree. The only things that will Need A hardware upgrade really are memory and 3G. Most everything else can be updated by software. That is why I went and got one- 8 G is enough for me, and I am usually at a hot spot, so the hardware is fine.

Sure, there are things I do not like with this one, but Apple is pretty dang good at listening... and fixing. With a multi-touch screen they can reprogram at will, the Rev 2 can still be the Rev 1 phone with upgraded software.

Here is my question....

I am a big Mac person. Got an iMac and MacbookPro at home/work

But, I am looking to get a good work/on-the-move phone....one with email/internet/ext....

Is the iPhone the right thing to get at this point?

I don't care about music on the iPhone...my IPod is fine with that.

What I want is a phone that I can do things at work with...I am a lawyer who needs contacts/dates/emails/interent

Worth it?

Or should I wait until Version 2 in a year or so when more apps are on the way?
