I have just bought a new IPP 12.9 (cellular 256gb) and think it is a great device. I will be mainly using it with the Apple Pencil for my university work studying music.

However, I do find it very large as a total package considering the screen size. The bezels are just huge, and with my iPhone X they seem even bigger. Of course, as a side effect to this the screen size is amazing and I wouldn’t consider downgrading to the 10.5 (which I previously tried and found too small).

I have just bought this and am well within the two week return window. Should I return it and wait for September to see if there are new iPPs, as these are going to have slimmer bezels from the rumours I have seen. What do you think? For those saying you should just keep it because you’ll need it for work, I imagine I can probably go without it until at least mid October before it starts becoming a bit annoying. I ask this question now because I wasn’t so acutely aware of September release rumours until just after getting my IPP. Is a September release alongside new iPhones incredibly likely? I feel maybe it will be worth it because from the looks of things this will be the biggest change to the iPad design since the...iPad!

Thanks!

I would wait, especially since you just bought it and new ones are around the corner. Bezels seem to be the biggest annoyance of this model, which is supposedly to be solved by the next.

Return it

If you think that bezels on the 12.9 Pro are "huge" then return it and wait to see if new Pros with smaller bezels will be announced in Oct/Nov. (it won't be Sept) I do not believe that there will be any significantly new iPad Pros this year. I'm looking at March 2019 at the earliest. It's possible that there may be a processor bump, but the 10.5 Pro was only released 14 months ago. It replaced the 9.7 Pro only 15 months after that was released. I can't see Apple revamping the Pro so soon again. But I'm rarely right in my predictions.

I’m in the same boat and could still return. I had the 10.5, so the 12.9 was admittedly an impulse buy, but having over 50% more screen is awesome (and I got it for a decent price). I definitely see this iPad as a viable alternative to a more traditional laptop setup, and I’ll be using it for more productivity oriented tasks going forward.

It’s a little hefty when you put a case on it, so I wouldn’t complain about less weight, but it’s really only “heavy” when compared to the smaller iPads. I don’t mind the bezels, but since you’re a happy iPhone X owner you might want to return the 12.9 and see what Apple offers this fall.

As for me, if thinner and lighter means losing the home button, Touch ID, and the headphone jack (which, unlike my iPhone, I do sometimes use on the iPad), I probably won’t be on board with the next gen iPads for now. We’ll see.

If you don’t like the current model, there is your answer.
There will be a new one out sometime this year I guess, but we’ll have to see when exactly.

At the end of the day it’s just a computer, and just a tool. If you don’t like it, get something you can live with better.

Thanks. You're certainly right in saying this. I'm less fussed in getting the 'latest' thing and do care more about user experience, which is already great on the current model. However, for me the bezel shrinking proposed on the newer model would greatly enhance it for me because it will make the screen even more clear and stand out even better.

I can definitely live with the current one, but perhaps for a little more waiting I can get something even better...!

They will probably announce them in September, last year was at WWDC and the year before that was the September event. Personally I think they will announce them at the September event, it makes more sense to group iOS devices together (ie iPhone and iPad). M

They won’t have a 2 hour keynote just to talk about iPhone and Apple Watch, if they also update the MacBooks as well it will probably be a packed event but still something Apple is willing to do, they did that last June at WWDC.

My guess is:

September:

Apple Watch Series 4
iPhone (3 models)
iPad Pro - two versions 11” and 12.9”
AirPower release date given

Possibly the announcement of the rumoured 13” MacBook low budget to replace the Air.

OR an October event for Mac’s wher they also update iMac introduce new Mac Mini and so on.

Just my guess :)

This is what makes sense to me as well. We KNOW that new iPads with slimmer bezels and Face ID are coming due to all the references in the betas for iOS 12 (a new iPad icon, Animoji kit etc), so it’s just a matter of when.

To me, the September release alongside new iPhones would make the most sense because it will signify the design unification for Apple of the iPad and iPhone lines.

To release them at the same time as the Macs in October would make no sense to me; people will be wondering why touch based iOS devices are being released alongside laptops, the very things they are being pitted as replacements for. Releasing them at this point would in my opinion negatively affect sales of either the Macs or the iPads.

Releasing them with the iPhones will possibly drive people to buy a new iPhone (which will all have the new design) and an iPad at the same time, because I think the idea that they will be unified in terms of design and function (Face ID) is going to be very popular.

A subsequent October release of new (cheaper?) Macs would then mean that even the people who bought the new iPad might buy one, because they may feel they can justify the cost of a new Mac if it’s going to be cheaper. And let’s not forget the holiday season as well. Just my thoughts.

Since you’ve just purchased it, I’d return it. There are rumours about a 12.9” with slimmer borders and I think it’s likely to be announced soon and released between late September and Mid November. No knowledge, just what I think is likely. I think it’s so close and you sound like you really want one with slimmer bezels, so return it and wait. It can be a hard wait, but you’ll be glad that you did, judging by your posts.

I had the 1st gen 12.9” (given to my daughter) and now have the 2nd gen 12.9”. Great iPads, especially the 2nd gen. I’m really looking forward too with smaller bezels. Since I’ve already got the 2nd gen though, it’s harder to justify the upgrade. At this stage, I’d wait for the next one.

Actually, slimmer bezel could be a bad thing. While holding the device with a bigger bezel, your fingers are touching the bezel. But while holding the device with a slimmer bezel or no bezel, your fingers are touching the screen. This could cause you to make the device to do something you don’t want it to do. Besides, your thumbs are obstructing the screen.
