Should I Migrate?

I am awaiting the delivery of my shiny new 2013 6 core Mac Pro. Yay!
Its the first new computer since 2010 when I got my MacBook Pro i7 17".
Simple question.
Should I use Migration Assistant?
I Use Photoshop CC and myriad programs.

Once you're done migrating your data to your brand spanking new Mac Pro, can you migrate your MBP to me...?

Sure, why not? That’s what this feature is for.

I just don't want to migrate any unnecessary MBP only hidden files or dead stuff that (maybe) has started to clog up preferences, or other background stuff. If I ever wipe and start from scratch the hard drive and OS I MUST first install from the original disks provided with the MBP because it has drivers for the video and other stuff that are not included with a retail version of the OS. Then I can upgrade to current OS.
I don't want to migrate crap I don't need or may cause problems with the new, totally different computer.

While you're waiting would be a good time to clear out junky old Apps, drivers, prefs etc. that you haven't used since 2012.
Don't be surpised to find a startup item or two from 2007.

I usually just manually copy over data from ~/Library/Application Support and ~/Library/Preferences. You can usually tell which files to copy over by there names which is not too hard to match up with the application that uses the data. Of course there is the usual folder like ~/Desktop, ~/Downloads, etc.

Not sure that I can follow you there. Nevertheless, the Migration Assistant isn’t going to copy your entire hard drive over, it should be a lot smarter than that and differentiate between some obsolete files. However, given that you are sceptical about this, I would do it manually. Just start from scratch and copy the stuff over bit by bit. It might be a long process, but it’s the best and most rewarding option. Migration Assistant is only going to disappoint you if it doesn’t do exactly as you had hoped.

I am working on that. Running Onyx, Maintenance, any others you suggest?
I haven't found start up items yet.
