Should I remove the RAID card?

MacPro 3,1 (early 2008) currently using (two) 300gb, 15k rpm SAS drives.

The RAID battery is dead anyway. My Time Capsule backup is a copy of the system volume being shared between the two drives.

How should I back up my program data and files? Then remove the RAID card to re-utilize the two SAS 15k rpm drives? I assume each of these connect to mb with ipass cables? Finally, reload the program and data files onto one host drive and use the other for additional back up?

Uh... I dunno what to tell you... plug in an external disk drive and copy your files onto that?..

FWIW, you can order a new RAID battery from Apple, the P/N is 922-8964.

I gave them a call about a month ago, the first level tech support guy was friendly, but had no idea what I was talking about. I was eventually transferred to a supervisor who was able to order the part for me, it cost $48 US + $12 for S/H. It showed up in about 4 business days, and I was able to install it myself (they didn't want the old part back or anything).

So they do still have a few kicking around, and they're a lot cheaper than trying to buy one off the internet.

I would let the 15k drives go and plug in a 500 GB ssd. Much better response and silent. I guess the 15k drives are a little old now and worn out. Keep them and the raid controller as a hard backup and enjoy the silence
