Hi,

I purchased a 3g on October 2008 with Applecare warranty for the second year. My battery life has really plummeted(lasts about 3-5 hours if I am using it wihotu music/video), I have dropped calls all the time, and the device is running really slow on firmware 3.1.2.

I checked the AT&T site and they state I will be elegible for a "subsidized" upgrade to a new phone in March 2010. I know a new(4g?) phone might come out in June-July 2010. However, I am really frustrated with the phone battery and speed.

What is likely to happen if I take the 3g to Apple for replacement under Apple care? Will they replace it with new 3g(or 3gs) or make me wait a week for a replacement?

If I get the 3g replaced with 3g/3gs will this make me ineligible for the 4g "subsidized" upgrade? Will I have to pay full price to get the 4g if I use apple care to replace the 3g?

Thanks.

You won't get a 3GS; you'll get a 3G and if they don't have one in store, they will order one for you.

In any case, even if you were to get a 3GS, you would still be eligible for an upgrade because the upgrade is related to AT&T, not Apple (and replacements are done by Apple).

you have two choices

First choice
a) wait to get a replacement until the iPhone is announced
b) sell your mint refurbished iPhone 3g

Second choice
a) get your phone replaced now
b) sell your slightly used iPhone 3g when the new one comes out

I would probably due the second one. Even if it is brand new , that iPhone 3G is not going to be worth much once the new 4g iPhone comes out ( since the price of IPhone 3g's will plummet)

So in conclusion

the few extra dollars (20-40) you will make by waiting to replace your iPhone, are really not worth it ( crappy battery life, etc)

No using your apple care won't have any effect on your upgrade eligibility. Apple will replace it with the same model you have now. I'd go ahead and make a genius appointment and see about getting it replaced. That is why you paid for apple care after all, isn't it?
