I ordered the 2020 iPad Pro 1 hour after release since I was super excited to get my first iPad. My usage is going to involve a lot of photo editing and some video editing in LumaFusion(if WWDC doesn't announce FCP for iPad).

I just started realizing that there is not much improvements.
  • Ultra Wide camera - No use
  • Lidar - Nothing yet. What is actually the possible use for me?
  • 10% GPU bump - May be for video rendering? Not excited
  • 50% RAM Bump - Worth it?
2018 iPP works with the Magic keyboard as well. I purchased the 256GB variant. I can get the similar 2018 model for ~$240 cheaper with taxes.

Should I return the 2020 model? Is there a way to return for free with local stores closed?
Is it worth in anyway to have the 2020 model for my use case?

Keep the 2020 for the 6 GB RAM. That's 50% more RAM than the 2018 model.

Forgot to include that. Just edited the post.
Is it worth it? What are the daily use cases for the RAM? iOS RAM management is already pretty good right?

4 GB is fine for most now... but in my experience with moderate to heavy usage, it's the bigger RAM devices that have the best longevity.

Personally, I think now that 6 GB is included across all 2020 iPad Pro models, with even entry level $249 iPads now 3 GB RAM, and with a lot of the iPhones likely also going 6 GB in 2020 too, high end app development targeting higher RAM will be more prevalent going forward.

It's hard to justify targeting 6 GB devices when they represent less than 1% of the devices out there, which was probably the case in 2018 and 2019. But in 2020, everything changes.

BTW, the 2020 also gets faster WiFi. (The 2020 also gets better LTE, but if you want better cellular, it may pay to wait to get 5G.)

Yeah forgot the Wifi. Nah, I don’t use Cellular. I’m just wondering if I should save to upgrade later

In my opinion, you’ve already made the purchase, if you hold on to devices for a long time, you’re better off with the latest for longevity sake(again, just my opinion). I know $240 is a good chunk of change, but I think you’ll want the Benefits of this newer model. I don’t do hard core video editing, but even I, in the little editing I do, ran into serious lag issues when editing a longer video in iMovie on the 2018 iPad Pro.
to me, it seems like you’ll want to have something that will handle your editing a touch better than what the 2018 can do.
2018 is still a great iPad! I’m not saying it isn’t, simply just sharing my own experience.

Sure the extra RAM might seem to help. I also forgot the U1 chip for the future tags

If it is your first ever iPad Pro it is a no brainer Keep it !!

Or buy the 1TB 2018 iPad Pro which already has 6gb RAM and get a good deal online

No point in buying the new one when the older one is just the same and you get more memory, RAM and the price will be better

I have the 1tb from 2018 and its fantastic

That could be a cool alternative if the specs work for the OP. :)

Keep the 2020 iPad Pro! It'll last you a long time!

Thanks for the insight everyone. I guess I will keep the 2020 iPad Pro after all. I don't think I need more than 256GB 😊

Since your using LumaFusion and potentially FCPX (fingers crossed), the 2020 iPad Pro is the best. I have last years but the 1TB/6GB RAM. Depending on your video editing some 4K videos take a lot. Especially when FCPX** launches. (Hopefully)

Yeah I guess RAM is pretty important for video editing, plus some extra GPU. So I ll keep the 2020, thanks :)

yea I was thinking the same thing, but decided to keep it since my wife would get a nice 11in replacement for her 10.5 and I can give my daughter the 10.5 since they are going to digital learning here in NC

If you bought a 2018 1TB 6GB RAM iPP today... it would last almost exactly as long as the 2020 model. I personally have had different devices with 4GB RAM and another with 6GB and I've had the 4GB work better due to good management. I'm glad Apple upped the RAM but 4 was never too small for me and still is probably more than I need at this point. lol.
Things will update in terms of more intensive apps, but I highly doubt anything major in the next 1-3 years. I see developers maxing out at 3-4GB RAM as MOST iPad users are Air 3 and iPad 7's 3GB or earlier 5-6 models with 2GB.

K.

From a value standpoint you absolutely should just get a great deal on a 2018 model.

All of the recent iPads are ridiculous overkill on the hardware and will last many many years
