I purchased a Macbook Pro 2.2 from the ADC store, and after waiting for 3 weeks, finally got it. I've got the yellow Samsung screen, no dead pixels, but what looks like dust trapped in the screen. Its got the CPU whine, and the left palmrest isn't flush with the case and makes a creaking noise when I lay my hand on it. I'm really disappointed with Apple's recent quality inspection as my family and I have purchased numerous Apple products over the years and besides a couple issues here and there, have never had a product that had so many defects out of the box.
My dilemma is whether to demand an all new machine or take it to the local Apple store and repair it. I don't want to wait another 3 weeks for another computer, and judging from other posts and my recent experience, Apple's build quality is seriously lacking and there's no guarantee I'd get a better machine.
Has anyone else just had a brand new machine repaired? I wish I could just get a replacement in the store, but since I had an upgraded hard drive and its a ADC purchase, I doubt they would give me another one in the store. How long did your repair take and did it come back better?

If it is an option, I would return it for a different unit. Better to wait another three weeks than have months of regret.

You shouldn't have to repair a brand new machine. If you have a few problems now you may just have more later. Do yourself a favor and return it for a unit with no problems out of the box.

Definitely return it. But are you sure you got the CPU whine? I thought it was non-existant on SR MBP. Please tell us more about that.

There's this high pitched electrical sound; its coming from the keyboard, not from the hard drive. Its constant and occurs when its on battery and ac powered.

Return it for an exchange, definitely.

Don't repair it.

You don't want to end up like a lot of us here have and have the system returned from "repair" in worse condition than it went out in.

Get it replaced.

new = new
refurbished = new + repair

And you bought "new". :cool:

Does it disappear if you turn of one CPU core (you need Apple's CHUD tools installed to try this, they come with the XCode package)? You could also try turning on Photo Booth to put just enough load on the CPU. Does it disappear, or at least quiet down, when you do any of this?

The reason I'm asking is because the CPU whine on the MacBook drove me crazy, and I haven't experienced it at all on any of my four SR MBPs. There was another thing that was whining too, I believe, it might've been the screen inverter, maybe that's what you have. It'll suck so bad if the CPU whine is present on some new SR MBPs.

I did try the Photobooth trick, but the whine was still there. I didn't do the XCode workaround, but I don't think I should have to, as I paid for a dual core CPU so I should be able to use both cores. Guess its another 3 week wait for a new one. Its a real shame about Apple's recent quality control. I remember how Macs were famous for lasting years beyond your typical PC, but with Apple gaining sales and market share, they're starting to become just another cheap labor manufacturer.

Don't get me wrong, I was never suggesting you should do this as a way to live with the computer, only to diagnose the problem! You should return it ASAP.

It seems it's not the CPU whine, and I'm glad that's not back. I'm not too glad that Apple still haven't gotten me a problem free computer, though.
