Well I have had the new iMac set up for over a week now and loving pretty much everything about it. I was dissapointed when I first turned it on to find at least 2 dead pixels and what presumably is some kind of dust or a fingermark under the glass, but as it is in the bottom right corner of the screen I decided to give it a try for a week and see how I feel about it.

Well it is still annoying me, and is noticeable in a lot of things I am doing, especially when I have certain colours in that area.

My question is: Can I/Should I return it because of this?

Obviously the hassle involved in doing so would be a real pain, as I had all the upgrades and ordered direct from the Apple Store online. Or is there a way to get them to send a new one and only ship this back when the new one arrives?

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Thanks

Yes I'd definetly exchange it. It already bothers you so do the exchange. In most cases you can get them to send you another quite easily but requires giving them your credit card info in case they don't receive the first one back.

Exchange it for sure. It's a hassle for sure but totally worth it. Say you don't want to wait for a new one to be shipped, or if they have one in store and can swap a few components. Or ask if you could have a loaner, and see what they say, ya know?
You paid for this new product, so you deserve a perfect product. Even if its a refurb, shouldn't have dead pixel.s..

If you aren't completely satisfied, ask what else they could do for you AND ask them how they know this wont happen again if it's shipped to you.

Thanks guys - I guess I will bite the bullet and return it then, as it will always bother me.

Probably should have decided BEFORE I spent the last week gradually moving everything over onto it, but I guess it should be easy enough to just back up and drag everything back onto the new one when it arrives yes?

Either user Carbon Copy Cloner or Time Machine. Both are easy to use, but you will need an external hard drive.

If you will have access to both the iMacs for a time, then you could use Taget Disk Mode.

Return and exchange it

Yes, return it and exchange it for a different one. I believe you have 14 days in which to return it if you choose. I did this with my Macbook Pro. It came with one single, bright red pixel which was stuck. I took it back to the shop and they exchanged it for another model which was fine.

Best option for back up is time capsule. If you don't have one, but have an ipod around, you can turn your ipod into a backup drive. Look online for a guide.

I'd return it. With the large volume of returns, they must have sent you a refurbished model. I think Apple is doing this because so many people are returningtheir yellow screens. They are just sending them back out.

Absolutely not the case. Apple sells the refurbs in their referb store. Actually you might get better quality there as all of those refurbs have been checked out maybe more so than at the factory.

Well I asked Apple for a replacement and the new one is scheduled to arrive tomorrow, and they are giving me 5 days to send the current one back too. (Top marks for customer support as usual!)

The weird thing is, I was playing around with a few different pixel checking programs, mainly so I could give them exact info on where they were when I return it. Out of the blue, one of what I assumed to be a dead pixel simply no longer was dead, and another also became less noticeable. Has anyone had this happen to them? Even if they are gone for good (which seems unlikely surely?), there is still a couple of marks or dust under the screen which annoy me just as much as the dead pixel did. So I will take a look at the new one and see how that is before talking to Apple again.

Anyone had any similar experiences? What do most people use to thoroughly test out their screens?

New one arrived with a huge speck of dust under the screen - is there a way to blow these out?

Ive never done it myself but a few people i know have pulled the glass off using suction cups in the 2 top corners and gently pulling the glass back. Or if there is an Apple store near you book an appointment at the genius bar and ask them to do it.

either drive to the apple store and wait while someone else does it, or grab a credit card or use your finger nail to pull the "glass" just enough to break the magnetic hold, then it will just come right off. It's no big deal once you do it the first time you'll see how easy it is.
Can O' Air or the polishing cloth that comes with the computer will take care of it in a total of 3 minutes tops.

The irony of this is quite amusing. Its a HUGE SPECK of dust....beautiful. Anyway, the only way to blow this out would be to take the screen off and clean it.

Im getting a replacement for my imac, and I hope this doesnt happen....

Spoke to Apple today and told them I got another with dust between the glass. Asked them if I should just try to blow it out myself and was told to definitely not do this myself, and that they would prefer to send me another new one.

I said to the guy - surely this seems ridiculous if I can do it myself, but he was adamant.

So I guess I will await iMac #3

So, all new iMacs have debris floating around inside the glass panel?

Sounds like a refubished computer to me. Why would there be all of this stuff flying around inside. Poor manufacturing quality control or refurbished units.

Which is it?

I'd say poor quality control. I don't know about elsewhere in the world, but in the US I believe it's against the law to sell something that's refurbished as new.

I just can not get my head round it to be honest. If the next one comes in the same state I may just return them all and go the Mac Pro route.

Thats what I did after returning 4 iMacs. I dont regret it at all. Since buying the Mac Pro I have started using more applications that some of the iMacs would have struggled with. The extra storage space has helped too.

HP and DELL have both been caught doing just that and were fined. If you dont think it happens, you must beleive in Santa Claus. Laws dont necessarily prevent companies from doing illegal things, you know.
