I've been buying every iPhone on day 1 since the first model. The X was the first time I didn't want a new iPhone and didn't order it on day 1. I finally decided to give the X a try. I've had it only one day and so far I don't like it and want to return it already. First iPhone ever that I've felt this way about. Coming from an 7+ it feels like a step back in many ways, without adding much. Should I return it, or will I appreciate it over time?

My complaints are all about the screen. Yes the screen is longer than the plus model, but I don't want a longer screen, it just makes it harder to use with one hand. Coming from a plus model, it's harder to type with. Putting control center at the top corner makes it nearly impossible to use with one hand, which is when I need control center the most. I'm not getting used to the notch, it's fugly. If they had made the screen slightly wider and had a hardware home button on the side, it would be the same screen size as the plus model with a smaller form factor, which would have accommodated users who wanted a larger screen and those who wanted a smaller phone. And developers wouldn't have had to update their apps.

What could have made it a perfect phone IMHO:
- Made the notch a dedicated status area and black out the sides.
- Matched the size of the plus screen (excluding the notch).
- Reduced the rounding on the edges to get rid of the dead zones and allow apps to use the whole screen.
- Made a physical home button on the side and kept control center at the bottom.

Return.

Too expensive if you don’t love it.

I looooove mine. Coming from 7 plus which now feels like a surfboard in my hands.

Yes, control center is a joke but I cannot imagine going back to an 8 or 8+, my biggest worry was face id but I love how passive it is. If I ditched the X it would be for a Pixel 2 or to go back to my S8+ that I still have.

if I returned my X it would purely because of the cost, I have 4 days left to return and think £1150 is ridiculous for a phone, and a part of me would like to send a statement to apple and return it.
Price is crazy. Bought a new Note 8 for £660 today from Amazon (sold by Amazon). That's nearly half the price of the X and I can expand the storage beyond entry level 64GB!

IPad pro 12.9" 2017 is sold. If the transition to the Note works out my Apple watch is gone. If it's not for me my 7+ still serves me well. Apple has lost its shine for me and I'm looking over the fence. Fingers crossed.

Sometimes in order to appreciate iOS an Apple, you have to experience the other side With the disadvantages and advantages to android.

For me, having five years of iOS updates on my iPads and iPhones, that to me is a selling point versus two years of updates with Android.

I returned my iPhone X 256 GB yesterday unopened. For me Reachability and Control Panel are big features that I use dozens of times a day. I might consider the iPhone SE2 when it comes out. I'm very much a use the phone with one hand as much as possible person. Reachability added extra steps when changing between who you are texting for example but worked with the trade off of a larger screen.

Like a lot of folks, I have adopted the "pinkie on the bottom" approach to maximize thumb travel. With any finger on the bottom of the phone with the iPhone X, I just didn't have any room to activate Reachability. I could of course hold it with my other hand and swipe down but that was pointless. It feels like an afterthought and doesn't work. When you combine the two, Reachability plus bringing Control Panel down from the top right, it works in theory but again if I had my pinkie under the phone there simply wasn't room to downward swipe. I just can't imagine not being able to use Reachability properly on the phone. I mean I even use it on the home screen to activate apps that are higher up on the screen and this would be even more true on the stretched iPhone X screen.

I'm hoping that by next year Apple will have figured out something different. It is clear this year that the phone wasn't really designed with Reachability as a thought and that it was added afterwards and is not enabled by default. I'd even argue that the means of activating it feels hidden. Likewise the Control Panel from the top right just feels wrong.

I'm hoping like Apple will have another go and rethink some of the decisions they made so far with iOS 11 on iPhone X and much like how they made improvements to Watch OS, they will find some means of improving the interactions on the same hardware.

I'll be happy to give it a look next year and in the meantime I am more than happy with my iPhone 7.

Having used a IP7+ for a year I also use my pinky to rest the phone but have learned how to shimmy my hand around to interact with the phone. I use reachability all the time. This can also be learned with the X after using it for a few days. Infact all of the gestures on the X are easily learned and something I'm sure we will see the competition copy soon enough as its a great feature. It's just muscle memory.

This review nailed it for me. It was literally word for word my thought process about why I returned the phone and will try again next year.

Also I shouldn't have to "shimmy" my pinky around every time I want to use reachability. That is sort of the point of reachability in the first place. You double tap home and the icons and so on move toward you. Moving your hand to use reachability defeats the purpose and is bad design. I'll wait to see if Apple handles this better.

In order to completely cover the IP7+ with my thumb I have to adjust my grip but the pinky never moves.

Regarding reachability on the X I just stretch my thumb down. My point is everything can be learned into muscle memory.

But I would agree with others that I'm no fan of control centre being in the top right.

You’re not alone, mate. I also came from an iPhone 7 Plus and the more I use the X the more I dislike it (I’ve had it for about a day)

I get that there was a lot of hype over OLED, but I’d say the slight increase in resolution hasn’t been worth the green tinted viewing angles.

The absence of bezels feels like something they’ve had to deal with rather than take advantage of. Who was crying out for a longer screen?!

I didn’t use to have to press anything to activate Apple Pay - just lay a finger on the home button. Now I have to double click the side button. Not a massive change but I’m not thrilled.

The rounded corners and added length give it the profile of a massive bandaid. I REALLY miss the width. Like you, i think they’d have been better just somehow removing the top and bottom bezels of the Plus models: let everyone enjoy that nice big screen. And no need to use OLED: keep the cost under $1000!

In short, for the first time ever I’m not impressed. It really hasn’t added much. I guess it’s nice not to have to have such a large phone in the pocket but that was never really much of and issue. As I say; take the top and bottom bezels off and it would’ve been perfect.

It’s possible I may get used to it all, but that’s not a very Apple way to roll! Seriously considering returning it (if that’s allowed where I am).

Was glad to see Apple's return policy until Jan 8th. It's a Galaxy 8 only in some ways but $400 more. I returned iPhone and iPad and took the Galaxy S8+. Probably be getting S9+ as soon as it ships.

I have had my X a week. I have had quite a few adjustment issues (ApplePay being the biggest), but if you bought after the extended holiday return period became effective you might give it some more time. I'm just beginning to feel like the X gestures are second nature, and now that they are the intriguing thing is that at least in some cases the phone almost seems to disappear, as a physical object. I'm going to give it some more time and see how I feel in a few weeks.

If you’re not willing to take the time to adjust you will probably be better off with an 8 Plus.

You most likely won’t be buying another iPhone for a while given that the notch and rounded corners will be on the next few iPhones, there will be no replacement home button, and control center is definitely not being relocated back to the bottom.

It’s either adjust now or adjust later but if you plan on staying with the iPhone, you will be adjusting eventually.

I've had iphones since the 3g and upgrade most years, sometimes two since. This is the first year I am even looking at Android options after being when I look back an Apple fanboy all along. Razor phone or 5T from One Plus.

Given that I am still very happy with both my iPhone 6s Plus and 6 Plus (I use both) I will wait until next year

I returned it today. I really hated that phone with a passion. First time I've ever returned an Apple product (and I've purchased a ton) and first year I wont be updating my phone or any other Apple product.
I know I'm a bit late, but I did the same. I tried to the X so much and kept trying to convince myself I loved it when I really didn't. Hated the narrow screen, the notch set my OCD into overdrive. Got the 8 plus instead as I love how you can use the homescreen in landscape and the extra wide screen without the obtrusive notch. I couldn't watch a video zoomed in as all I'd see was the notch. Really hope Apple keep the traditional iPhone shape for a few years.

You returned it. The thread should be over. Stop trying to troll and convince other people that their phones suck.
I don't think anyone is trying to get people to return their iPhones. I think many like me come to this website for opionions as. The more the better in my case.

Came here hoping someone might convince me otherwise but I'm returning mine for an 8 plus as well. Display is gorgeous but the loss in width, keyboard size, facial unlock delay, and having to pick my phone up just to unlock it instead of simply touching it with my finger means that even after a week I'm annoyed rather than pleased for an even more expensive device.

So back to Apple it goes. My first return of a new product in all my years as a loyal customer since the candy colored iMac days.

It's a shame too because there really is a lot to love about the new X.

I'll very gladly revisit this design when:

- We get an X Plus with a screen at LEAST as wide as the 7/8 Plus.

- Geo-fenced password activation/deactivation so that it's automatically unlocked when connected to home wi-fi or paired with my car. Already available as a jailbreak tweak and on Android devices, get with it Apple! I'll still be annoyed by the facial recognition delay and having to pick it up when out and about but at least it would be a non issue 90% of the time that I'm using it.

If not for these two issues I'd be keeping this one too.

Like any consumer device, it's not for everyone. That's why there's other  phone variations AND other brands. For me, it works and I love it.

There may well be an X plus but the 16:9 aspect ratio is gone. Going forward we are going to get taller, narrower phones like the X.

I’ve had every iPhone since the first one launched 6/29/07. Each one was great in their own way. In between models I’d venture off to a blackberry. Recently I I was using a 7 Plus and decided to give the N8 a try. Not going to lie, it was a great device that was extremely capable. On the flip side the OS seemed clunky at times which made me miss Apple. A few days ago I purchased an X for myself and an 8 Plus for the wife. For whatever reason I am loving the pocketable size of the X. I was holding her 8 Plus and it’s just so damn square and doesn’t fit in the pockets well at all. I find the X to be an outstanding device that works for me. I see you’ve already returned yours. I didn’t think I was going to like it either, but I’ve loved it since day one.

The longer screen sizes of the Note 8 makes it easier to read content like yours which is pretty big

I do think same would be true with the iPhone X screen?

The wider display along with the crazy bezels forced me to get a 7 after using a 6 plus. Now have a Note 8 and love I can have a bigger screen. Do miss the small nature of the 7 tho at times

I love my iPhone X. I love almost everything about it. :)

I’m packing it up to return it this week. :(

Glaring harsh white even on low brightness and pulse width modulation caused a flicker that made me unable to read ebooks on it and made my eyes feel gritty and strained when doing long emails and surfing on it. Movies and games are fine but focusing on text was impossible because to me, the words have a little shake to them. The shake looked worse when I tried dark mode on my Kindle reader. It was a no go.

I’m going back to my 7 Plus. If the rumors are true and the next LCD IPhone has inferior display specs compared to the specs we have now, I’ll make the jump to Android exclusively when my current Apple devices die out. My S8+ has OLED and possibly also uses pwm but for some reason it does not strain my eyes in the same way.

Iphone pricing is also getting out of hand if they are going to consider the flagship pricing we’ve been paying all these years to be their “budget” pricing.

My husband’s X display is VERY different from that of my X. Despite not looking as pretty with a strong blue shift, its whites are much less harsh and glaring. I’ll be able to use his phone. Unfortunately the pwm will ensure I’m not going to have as easy a time viewing the display as I do my 7Plus display. But the gentler whites will enable me to use it more than I can the silver X I’m returning.

As a hand me down it’s okay. But for both of us to have $1500 phones at the same time, eh, it’s not worth it in my opinion. We will return mine, add Apple Care Plus to his and I’ll take his X when I’m ready to upgrade. Oops, I mean when he is ready to upgrade.

I’ll miss the incredibly capable camera but I’ll be getting a Pixel 2 for $740. As long as I get a device that doesn’t have defects, the camera of the Pixel 2 will make up for the loss of the X’s camera. My 7 Plus still does excellent video that will meet my needs.

No, I did not return my X. Have had since launch day and I think my X is awesome sauce. Do not care about notch at all and even appreciate its functionality (defining swipe areas, etc), love the size (would not personally want a larger form factor), do not miss home button at all, super happy with Face ID and gestures. The things you mention would make it perfect for you would definitely not make it perfect for me.

If you don’t like it, then return it. I’d encourage you to give it the 14 days though and not decide based on one day since it is so different from what you are used to. Maybe you might be happier with an X Plus as rumoured for next year.

But keep in mind many of the things you have issue with may be around for a while...even on an X Plus.
Larger phones are objectively better from a user experience perspective (because Apple disables certain features on smaller screens). You probably have tiny hands. The rest of the iPhone X is an upgrade. The size is the only downgrade.
