should i sell my G5?

Since bootcamp was released, I have wanted a great deal to get an intel imac to dual boot windows and osx. One reason being that I can play games I can't on my G5 PowerMac and I need just a few apps that only run on windows.

I have the Dual 2ghz G5 Rev. B Powermac with 2.5 gigs RAM, 160gb HD, 9800 Pro 128mb. I was wondering if it would be a smart move to sell that and my monitor (Dell 2005FPW) for an intel imac?

In the end, I was hoping to come out ahead financially as well, by maybe a couple hundred dollars.

Assuming that you bought the powermac for your "professional work"....
Isn't selling the powermac to get iMac pointless?

I mean.. you purchased professional G5 Powermac.. and considering most of the professional applicatoin is still running under rosetta... why not keep it?

I'm pretty sure you didn't buy that powermac for gaming...

i'm not a pro, i'm just a college student. i bought the powermac because at the time, the imac was just a g5 and was not appealing to me. but since the intel's have dual core now they are more appealing and running windows is a bigger bonus.

i'm not a hardcore gamer though, just be nice to play the occasional nba live 06 of nhl 06 on my mac via XP.

I can hardly wait for all the closet-gamers to come out of the woodwork, if the new macs have the ability to run more games (including ones for PC). Fact is, mac users WANTED to play the games all along; however, when asked, those people typically claimed that they bought their mac for business or professional use, not for gaming. Which is a good thing...because, you know, they wouldn't have been as cool to everyone else if they'd bought macs with the intent of gaming much. Because macs aren't for that.

It used to be a frequent highlight of macs (used especially when defending their prices or crappy gaming performance), that most people who buy them use them for productive ventures, and the always impressive "professional" work.

I also find it peculiar that many people are doubling back on their "Windows Sucks!" theorem, now that it can run on a mac. Whatever happened to solid convictions, standing firm, or what have you? Perhaps they were just closet Windows-lovers too.

While you'll get good money for your G5's if you decide to sell them,
keep in mind that Boot Camp is a limited beta test application.

You will eventually need to upgrade to Leopard to continue dual boot capabilities.

You must also have a full retail CD of Windows XP Home or XP Pro with SP2
in order to take advantage of dual boot capabilites.
The OEM CD from your old P/C won't cut it.

While the Core Duo ( Yonah ) based iMacs are truly remarkable machines for the money, the Meron and Conroe based machines will soon put them to shame.

IMHO, I would keep what you have and treat yourself to an XBox 360
for gaming until the Sony PS3's are out.

If you realy like Intel iMac, sell your G5 ASAP. I think the money can pay your iMac Intel 20". Don't worry merom, Someone already put merom ES samples in Yonah laptops.

well i would be saving money too by getting the imac, so the xbox/ps3 is out of question.

i can get cheap XP Pro from my campus store, so that's not a problem.

and if you know my history, i'm not a closet gamer or windows lover. I'm proud of my liking of Windows! I always have, never been closet about it

If that's the case, I recommend that you sell your G5 as soon as possible.. given that you are 100% sure you will be happy with iMac Intel or whatever you'd like to get.

The value of PPC is going down.. and the book camp is really the choice for gaming on mac (technically it's not on 'mac' anymore.. but whatever)
