Hi,

I am debating on selling my 2013 iMac after buying a 2017 MacBook Pro with the following specs:

2.9GHz quad-core 7th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
16GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory
1TB SSD storage
Radeon Pro 560 with 4GB memory

Estimated Geekbench
4490-4600 - Single-Core Score
15300-15900 - Multi-Core Score

2013 iMac Specs:
3.5 GHz Intel Core i7
24 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB
3TB Fusion

Actual Geekbench
4491 - Single-Core Score
15315 - Multi-Core Score

Would it make sense to sell my iMac and just buy a nice external monitor and dock for my MacBook Pro?

Any opinions or suggestions will be appreciated.

You could always use the iMac as a target display but for the price you can sell it you should get yourself a nice 4k display instead.

I would sell that in a heartbeat. Similar geek bench scores would say it would be enough of a reason but even just using it in the same conditions I would still say so.

Geekbench scores won't reflect the sustained usage of these machines. The iMac may have a lower clock speed but the cooling system is superior to the mbp. Also keep in mind the gtx780M is also a faster card.

Do you have any real purpose for the iMac is the question.

Why sell the iMac?

There's little that beats having a nice desktop to work on "for desktop things" -AND- a nice laptop to carry around wherever you need to...

It all depends on what you use your computers for. But I would be inclined to sell the iMac, then get a 4K display and a decent NAS for storage and "servery" things. That's the setup I have and it is working out quite nicely. Not sure the money you get for the iMac will cover all of that, but that's what I would start working toward.

I have a similar iMac and I plan on keeping it despite buying a 2016 15" MBP. The larger screen 24GB of memory and the 3TB fusion drive are just too hard to let go of, especially since I think that was the last model in which we could add non-Apple RAM.

I'd vote for keeping it. Worst case scenario you might have someone in your family who could use it later.
