If you can sell that machine for 2K you should. It really is worth less than half that.

What rendering and editing software do you currently use?

For the mac pro 4.1 2009 2.66ghz, the average selling price nowadays is around $800 to $900. Sorry to say, at $2000 might be hard to find a buyer at that price level.

You could always upgrade your processor and add more RAM - way cheaper - plenty of threads on Macrumors about upgrades

No.

Depends on your definition of "kick-ass" of course, but last time I've checked the ones I consider "kick-ass" are $3K+.

GTX 780Ti is $700+ alone, and you need two of those to achieve real "kick-assness". :) 6-core i7 is $800+, etc.

Would it help to see if installing Windows on it through Bootcamp works for you rather than buying a new PC?

If this is a dual chip unit then you may be looking at $1200
If this is a single chip unit you are looking at $800

Give or take depending on quality of the case (wear, damage, etc)

If someone is offering you $2000 sell it and buy yourself a dual processor unit.
:)

I usualy use cinema 4d and Houdini for a bit of particle work nothing big and lots of video editing editing I love this machine never give me any problems its just getting old but i am thinking what can i build for 2000 dollars in PC world and if it is worth it. I went to local computer store Canada computers and guy told me that he can build me good PC for 1500, so wondering if i should stay or go

I have a 3,1 Octo, would never sell it for the current values, I built an i7 Sandybridge Hack to go with it.
They both do a great job.

Having done contract work for two Comedy Central TV shows and one Amazon Prime show with several friends working in the industry for Video, honestly, going to Windows isn't a bad idea.

I can name three TV shows I know for a fact dropped Final Cut Pro for Avid after the FCPX debacle. Also the new Mac Pro has severely put a dampener on the audio guys as well, as Hollywood mostly uses Protools and the proposition of either rebuying audio gear to replace PCIe interfaces has even audio guys considering Windows. Since Avid is cross platform, you're not locked into the Apple hardware.

I'm married to the OS itself and fortunately web development isn't nearly as hardware intensive. OS X is the better OS (especially for web development, as there's a level of insanity running emulated bash for things like Node.js in Windows) but for A/V, two fields Apple has traditionally called its bread and butter are more fluid than its ever been before.

What makes that a good build for his uses? You can grab a 6 core for $600. The performance difference doesn't justify the higher cost model. He would likely see more benefit from one Titan than 2 780s unless he doesn't need double precision and uses software that scales across multiple gpus (not that likely given his use cases).

He is a 3dfx artist not a gamer why go GTX 780Ti:confused:
