Should I sell my old iMac and spent another $1000 to buy a new one?

The new iMac 27 really looks so attractive to me. I have an old Aluminum 24'' iMac bought in late 2007. I guess I may be able to sell for about $1100-1200.

Now my question is should I sell it and get spent a few hundreds more to get a new one?

Wait till it dies. The longer you wait the faster and bigger they get.
My old G5 died so I took the plunge but wished it could of lasted at least 9 more month for the next refresh.

Short answer, no.

Long answer. Well, this isn't the right place to discuss it but suffice to say you will not get what you think you will for your iMac. 24" refurbs sell for that and come with a 1 year warranty and more modern internals. If your current iMac serves your needs, then you lose little by waiting.

Original computer cost: $2000. Value after 2 years: $800. Value after 3 years: $600, Value after 4 years: $500 Value after 5 years: $400

If Goofus takes a $1200 depreciation hit every 2 years and upgrades, his 10 year cost of ownership is $8000.

If Gallant takes a $1600 depreciation hit every 5 years and upgrades, his 10 year cost of ownership is $5200.

Your computer still has plenty of life left in it.

If anything take that $1000 and invest it elsewhere (Apple stock!?), or take a vacation. ^_^

No, you shouldn't. If it's screen space you want, just spend another 2-300 on an external 24" monitor so that you can have dual screens. That way you can just bring it along to your next computer when you get it.
