I don't know why but I've been flirting with the idea of switching to a Samsung for a while now. I've played with it in stores and I didn't particularly like it I just find that iOS has gotten stale. I currently have a macbook pro, ipad pro, apple watch, airpods, multiple apple tvs, so i'm not sure whether or not it's a good idea to break out of the ecosystem. My iphone does more than everything I need it to do and i've never had a single problem with any iphone i've owned since the 4. I just for some reason want to try out an Android but my brain is telling me it's a terrible idea and that my XS Max is almost paid off. Any thoughts/suggestions?

The S10 plus is a great phone and a worthy purchase. However considering you already have several other Apple devices it might be better to stay with your iPhone. The S10 + won’t work as well with your Apple devices as an iPhone would and some like the Apple Watch don’t work at all. Obviously you could still use your iPad, Apple TVs and Mac with the S10 + but it depends on how much you rely/covet integration between your devices and your willingness to replace some with devices made by other manufacturers or how much you use Apple’s apps and services.

I’ve also thought about switching to the S10+ and other Samsung phones in the past but what ultimately keeps me with the iPhone is the ecosystem. I have an Apple Watch, 2 iPads, a MacBook, 2 Apple TVs, 2 HomePods and AirPods and for me it’s not worth the hassle of switching as excellent as the S10+ is. I also use a lot of Apple’s services such as iCloud Photo Library, iCloud Drive storage and keychain to name a few. I’ve also bought hundreds of TV shows and movies over the years and currently would have no way of playing them on a non Apple/windows device.

You have a longterm marriage with Apple. :D

OP,
Jesus will still love you if you get a Sammy but, all bets are off with the forum members.

If boredom is the only reason (and I get that), I think you’ll end up regretting it and switching back. Maybe try some new apps or services to help the boredom.

Or start setting up google services to make the switch easier.

Your phone is a tool - and by your own admission, it does everything you want it to do. So, the wise thing is not to sink capital into replacing/ buying another phone and instead invest it in another area of your life (savings, college, business, whatever your station in life maybe)

It's not a terrible idea, but it's going to take some investment. And not just financially like getting a new smart watch, earbuds, fast wireless charger, or other accessories. But an investment in redesigning your own ecosystem, and getting used to the way Android works. Plenty of switchers give up very quickly.

You've already made the first mistake (for lack of better word) in being fully engulfed in Apple's ecosystem.

I would personally suggest, slowly moving to Google services, like syncing contacts, calendar, voicemail (via Google Voice), and etc, while you're still using the iPhone. This will make for an easier transition.

The Pros will be the freedom, features, and compatibility.
The Cons will be the lack of integration with your other Apple devices, and Google nor Samsung is designed to hold you hand.

Sell all your Apple stuff NOW since they are doomed anyway (anytime soon, probably, I think). 5G Samsung is now and you don’t have to upgrade anymore for years to come (until you move a few feet away and no 5G coverage).

Not that you need reminding, but iOS is getting updated in the near future, so maybe give it till then, then see if it's still boring.

I'm not so sure going cold turkey is the best course of action to suit your curiosity etc for now

You don't have to opt for the flagship models initially IMO for $3-500 you can get a a very good Android device especially 2nd hand

I would try running an Android device as an experiment in frugality to chase out the excess in your current ECO and see how far you can go. I expect you will be amazed at your excess and savings possible just because of convenience

Even those with $100's if not $1000 of moves etc can still access them with a cheap/old Ipad

I would even try a simple carrier with no sms and 5GB data plan than the usual carriers unlimited bundles costing 5 or 6 times more

You can then decide how far you want to go extracting yourself or just sell the phone :)

Seen it all before, people switch to Android because they are bored but expect things to work the same way as on iOS and inevitably switch back.

Unless you are really committed to change just stick with your iPhone. Android is different and it takes time to adjust and find new ways of doing things. However if you put in the time it has more potential then iOS.

Stay with your iPhone and buy the S10+ in a couple months for a few hundred if you really want it as Samsung devices are the worst in the biz at keeping their value.

This gives you the best of both to dabble in.

I have spent the last 3 or 4 years laying the groundwork to leave Apple. I don’t know how, but I’m probably more entrenched now.

I think Apple Maps in conjunction with my Apple Watch was my undoing. Doing lane changes to get on and off roads is a tricky maneuver where I live. Our traffic is so bad everywhere because we have corrupt civic planning. I find that my Apple Watch tapping my wrist to get me ready for a lane change is a huge game changer in making me a more confident driver who will get to my destination with no missed turns.

The best I’ve been able to do is use my Android phone “flavor of the month” on a second line.

And I’m about to lend my dad the sim for that second line so my connected phone will be only my Xr.

By the way, my husband prefers his Android phones for a lot of reasons but had to go back to his Max because notifications were coming in delayed and bunched together. I’ve seen other people complain about that. Has that been fixed?

He also had a few key apps he did prefer on iOS as opposed to their Android versions.

I have a Samsung watch I really love. But Apple keeps building in more functionality into their watches and Samsung hasn’t quite matched that yet, at least not in watches small enough to suit me.

I just asked about this in the OnePlus 7 Pro thread. I’ve had mixed answers to this question. One of the reasons I went back to my iPhone is because my notifications were coming in late on the Pixel 3 XL (and/or bunched together) and that’s really frustrating, especially when I need to interact with certain apps immediately. I’d really like to switch to the 7 Pro, but if this issue still persists (it sounds like it does), then I most likely won’t.

Had all the notes and S series, including S10 plus. Just ordered Xsmax. I am done with samsung. I will not disclose why, other than the instability of samsung's ecosystem. 13 years of samsung and other androids. As for 5g, NETWORK/DEVICE connectivity is sketchy at present.

I've had my s10+ for a while. I'm not sure which notifications people are talking about exactly as I haven't encountered an issue with anything generally

If your looking to upgrade from the XS Max, what about the OnePlus 7 Pro? That's supposed to be a amazing, and the Oxygen OS very smooth fast, and the 90hz display butter.

I believe if the OP does in fact switch to Galaxy, they will most likely come back to iOS in due time. It certainly doesn't help that they are deeply ingrained in the Apple ecosystem either. The Galaxy will not play nice with their Apple products at home.

Like the OP, I have considered moving to Galaxy (and Pixel), but it's just not worth it for me. Considering our house is all Apple products. If they can, buy a used Galaxy on Swappa and play around with it for a week. If they don't like it, they can always sell the device.

iOS 13 is going to be released in a month and half (give or take). I'm sure that will make the iOS devices feel "new" to the OP with the new features and all. But ultimately it's up to them to decide on whether they go with a Galaxy device or stick with their iPhone.

Horrible idea

If you really want to try out Android, just buy a used older Samsung or a cheaper Android like a 3a or even a Pixel 2/3 used

I made my decision. I’m just sticking with my XS Max and forgetting about it. It’s almost paid off and all of my stuff is Apple. Every single person in my contacts list has an iPhone as well. I just need to be happy with what I have and not chasing something else.
