I know that everyone else is having problems (especially with Safari), but I was wondering what you thought about my particular situation and if you think it'd be a good idea to return my iPhone. Here are a few examples with the probability of that the particular crash happens in parenthesis:

1. iPod crashes when Safari has loaded a page or two (90%)
2. iPod crashes when flipping through cover flow too fast (50%)
3. iPod crashes when trying to play a song via cover flow (30%)
4. iPod crashes when a text message is received and I tap "view" (100%)
5. Safari crashes after browsing to more than 3 or 4 pages (forget about having multiple pages open) (70%)
6. YouTube crashes here and there (20%)
7. Google maps crashes here and there (20%)

What do you mean crash? What exactly happens? An error message? It goes back to home screen?

I've seen some issues when the networked apps can't connect to either EDGE or WiFi. The phone gets sluggish and unresponsive.

It may be more of a case of poor AT&T coverage in your area. Not to say the the iPhone is perfect but being that you can't load 3rd party software, which could introduce instabilities, it seems strange that your phone would be acting up.

Another possibility is that you are visiting sites that Safari doesn't like and that could be causing issues. Maybe the sites have poor javascript coding or something.

Have you RESET your phone yet? Mine was doing the same thing, after doing a rest... (holding the power button and menu button until you see the silver apple on the screen) my crashing problem went away.

Do above, or at least to a soft re-boot by holding the screen lock button.

Like all "smart phones" the iPhone is more like a computer than a basic phone. Often a re-boot will fix things.

I should have known that a reboot would help. The crashing problem kept getting worse and worse over the last few days. By crashing, I mean it would just quit the application unexpectedly and go to the home screen, sometimes after pausing (freezing) for a few seconds.

After restarting, I tried some of the tasks that would have made it crash before restarting, and none of them occurred. I had not restarted since Friday or Saturday, so that must have been the problem.

EDIT: Even Weather.com's local forecast page, which was a sure thing crash, loaded fine.

I have to wonder if the fact that I didn't have to initially reset out of the box might be an issue. Since my reset, the phone has definitely run better...

I've also had some intermittent issues with crashing, sluggishness, etc. and have debated going back to the Apple Store. Last night, the phone was COMPLETELY unresponsive (the display would not turn on, the sleep/wake button would not work, plugging it into iTunes was useless, etc.) - I left it charged overnight and all of a sudden it was on and working again in the morning.

I think that many of these issues will be fixed in the first software update. To be sure, the phone is not 100% stable, but I've had phones in the past that are much worse and have far less functionality. I'm hoping that things will get fixed soon.

I would be peeved. I haven't had a crash yet and I'm a power user. Ive got this thing knocking down 5 email accounts and hitting secure http sites (banking) with certificates - 90% full of music, sending and receiving SMS for 5 days.

take it in to a genuis and duplicate your issue - or do an itunes iphone restore!

...by all means!

Restored Software

I also had this problem. It started Wednesday while I was sitting through an iPhone workshop at the Apple store. I tried to follow along with the instructor, but my phone kept crashing (Safari's screen turned black, paused, and returned to the Home page. Maps crashed also.). I took it to a Mac Genius immediately. They restored it to its factory state. It has since crashed once, but I am not upset. I suspect a software update will take care of it, and I'm glad to know it's not just me.
