Should I update carrier file? Will it affect me later?

Hey everyone. I'm new here. Thanks for all the great info. So unfortunately my 32gb 3GS came with 3.1. So I'm playing the waiting game for jailbreak. Thankfully I used a tutorial to back up my current 3.1 SHSH for futures use. As of now, I'm using carrier file 5.0. I was wondering if its okay to update to the latest one through iTunes so I can send mms. I was wondering if this might adversely affect jailbreaking, tethering, or anything else I might want to do in the future here. To my knowledge I don't think it would be a harm, but I don't want to risk it. Thought I'd ask the experts first.

Update your carrier file all you want.

Since your phone is at 3.1 now, there is very little you can do to adversely effect jailbreaking or unlocking beyond where it already is (ie; updated baseband)
