I don't know if I should update my first gen. mini to iOS 9 later today when it's released. Is iOS 9 GM noticeably slower than iOS 8.4.1?

My 1st gen iPad Mini is still running iOS7. I like it because it's not slow or buggy. Will iOS9 work smoothly?

I am afraid that it will slow down your machine very much.
[doublepost=1460703327][/doublepost]How large is the size of iOS 9 by the way? My ipad mini 2is only 16GB

iOS 9 was advertised as a 1.3Gb update from iOS 8 but that may have changed now considering the latest version is now iOS 9 .3. It should be noted that iOS 9 automatically deletes large apps at the top of your storage settings and automatically redownloads them once iOS 9 installation is done.
