I'm being given the choice of update to iPad OS 17.7 or jumping to 18.

For obvious reasons, I do not want to upgrade to version 18 -- yet, if at all. (I'm on an iPad 9.)

However, is 17.7 OK? Or, should I hold off on it, too, until bug reports come in and bugs are fixed?

Rev., thanks for your input!

I backed up my devices and then installed it here on an iPad 9 and an iPhone SE 2022. No issues whatsoever.

Thanks for the input, my mother has an iPad 9 and haven't got around to updating it yet. Good to know it works fine.

Have updated a few others, 10.5 iPad pro and Ipad Air 3 and it seems to run fine.
The only bug I have come across (iOS not iPadOS) twice now is a iMessage bug where I get a notification that I have a message and when opening the app there are no new ones.
Killing the app and opening it solves it and I can see the message.

Have restarted the device and haven't seen it since, fingers crossed it was only that.

If you must update, then go to 17.7.. As for iPadOS 18, I would check forums or Reddit to see how others with the same iPad are faring. I have been doing this since the iPhone 4S days, and it saved me a lot of trouble.

Are you suggesting sticking to 16.x is best?

I'm currently being offered iPadOS 17.7 on iPad Air 5 M1 but holding out with 16.7.

iOS 16.7 is over a year old and missing a lot of critical updates. No reason to stick with a dates OS if you don't have old apps that aren't working with later versions or similar reasons.
Since devices with less power than yours run iOS 17.7 fine it shouldn't be any problems. Not with iOS 18 either whenever iOS 17 stops being supported for your HW

17.7 still working like a charm on an iPad 9!

Highly doubtful I will install iPad OS 18; no reason to. AI holds no interest to me and I'm pretty sure it will bog down the iPad 9 or cause a battery hit!

My Mini 6 seems faster on 17.7.1 than it was on 17.7 (and it seems to have cut about 4GB out of system data which is a relief on a 64GB.) Hoping I can hold this version until the Mini gets OLED without losing access to apps. I have usually taken an OS just prior to a new one being released to maintain the best user experience for as long as possible.

iOS 17.7.1 works smooth on iPad Mini 6, but unfortunately it affected the battery…

I haven't tried the latest iOS 17.7.2 but I guess that won't fix it.

I kept iPad 6 and iPad 9 on iPadOS 16.7

I am not going to update iPad 6 to iPadOS 17.7.x but I may update iPad 9 to iPadOS 17.7.x while it is still signed...

I have a 12.9" iPad Pro from 2017, an iPad Air 3 from 2019 and an iPad 9 from 2021. The first one doesn't support iPadOS 18 and the other ones already had the beta of 18.1 installed.
But I precautionary downgraded them to 17.7 before it's too late. I rarely use them and can't tell if everything is ok with iOS 18. At least they didn't feel slower.

Went ahead and installed 17.7.2 and aside from it still affecting the battery like 17.7.1 did, it's smooth, responsive and I don't feel any slowness, plus it cleared up a lot of storage space which is nice.
