On December 14th I will be able to purchase the 3GS at $199. What are the major benefits of upgrading to the 3GS?

I would say if you have money growing on trees go for it. Otherwise, just wait until June and see what the next iPhone has in store. The 3GS isn't drastically different from the 3G.

It's pretty much up to you. I'd wait until June, when who knows what will be in store for the new iPhone because of the Droid coming out. However, if you must have it now, then get it, but it doesn't offer that much over the 3G (better camera, video, voice recog, faster processor, "better" battery (debatable)).

Wait it out till the summer

Why the heck would you want to do that? Just wait till June / July for the new model's to come out.

Or wait and see if Verizon is really going to pick up the iPhone and give that a try

There network is allot better than AT&T's , thats for sure

Agreed. I would wait.

I was able to upgrade my 3G 2 weeks ago and I went for it. There is still 6-7 months for a new release meanwhile I could really use the features of the 3GS. I use video all the time, its so much faster and it was truly worth it for me. I'm the primary on my family plan so I am able to upgrade my phone for the discounted price once a year, so I figured if a really nice 4th Gen comes out I can upgrade in November.

3GS has bigger memory and voice control, apple claim faster opening of apps but it must be miliseconds because i cant see the difference

If you want a new phone, jailbreak your 3G. It's a whole different world in jailbreaking spectrum

i would suggest you wait until summer. The 3GS was a bit of a lack luster.. really no major difference. I reccomend that you wait until summer and see whats the deal with the newest iphone. I understand waiting sucks but it would suck even more to to have to wait a yr and a half for a phone thats probably going to be 100times better.

With all the new smartphones to hit the market, Apple will respond and once again change the game! ;)

+1 excelent way to get a new phone without actually paying for one :) jailbreaking should get you busy until the next update so IMHO you should wait, that's what I'm doing anyway...

They better 'cause if not I'm moving to HTC I think...

It's not milliseconds. Try 3-5 seconds difference on average on any task and over 30 seconds slower bootup time.
Put them side by side or use the 3GS for a day and you'll see it.

I have a 3GS my friend has 3G no real difference maybe 1.5 seconds faster on 3GS

I'd wait.

I actually just returned a 3GS because it didn't feel like much of an upgrade compared to my 2G. I wouldn't recommend it for a 3G owner at all.

Hm, if you would asked this a month ago I would have said "YES", but now, it's like in the middle of the 'new iPhone cycle'. Now you should wait, even though 3Gs gives a much better experience than the 3G (that is, if you use it for a few weeks, not just one hour or so :p)

Upgrade price is 200 dollars? I think so thats 400 dollars in a year for the iPhone.

Too pricey for my wallet

I'd say go for it, the 3GS is a really good phone and video camera, it's much faster, the camera takes better pictures. Have not used voice control myself, but it does that too..... Anyway, for me, the video is the killer app.

Main reason I see to upgrade is the speed. I had a 3g phone and the 3gS is much snappier. Never a pause when opening up a program or to shoot off a text message. Keyboard doesn't slow down, it just works.

i'm personally waiting on it, i somewhat missed the black friday sale (in my opinion the last best time to get a 3gs) and i know being 6 months away til the next update, i bought an ipod touch 2g really cheap to get my fix while i wait.
the 3gs is snappier for sure, but i think we will see big improvements next revision (im shootin for higher resolution)...

or if u could, go ahead n get it now, try n sell it somehow before the new one comes out, and then buy new one for 400 in june (signing up for another 2yr contract, if u get some sort of price break in june. if not, just dont bother and wait).

Come on, you know you want to upgrade and be kickin with the cool kids!!!

If you can wait you should.

haha I was referring to the guy who said the speed difference is marginal. I upgraded from a 3G to a 3GS and it is MUCH faster.

It went through this debate last month.

I went to the AT&T store and spent awhile comparing them side by side. There is no doubt the 3GS is noticeably faster. But other than that, there was no compelling feature worth making the jump before seeing what the next gen will offer.

While it's 7 months away, details will start coming out this spring. A little extra speed isn't worth locking into another long term deal before seeing what's in the new model.
