Should I upgrade from SL?

Hi Guys,

I currently have a 13" MBP - Mid 2009

It runs great, I got the 2.26GHz, 8 GB Ram and a 500GB HD - Although I am considering a 256 SSD - If I don't sell this and buy a new one - As I have had this for 3 years now.

Is it worth moving from SL to ML? From what I have been reading, a lot of people have issues with ML?

I only upgrade when a newer version offers something I need or want that my current version doesn't offer. So far, I see nothing in Lion or ML that motivates me to upgrade, so I'm sticking with SL for now.

Without upgrading to ML you are missing a lot of good stuff from this OSX,
top of my head it is the reminder, notes and many more goodies,
you still want to stick with your old osx, who cares ?
My advice is $20 is worth invest in, should you get a new machine, do you still want to run SL, that is impossible.

Read over the features and see if anything there appeals to you. I would not be overly concerned about "issues." There are millions of Mountain Lion users happily using their machines out there. Generally only the ones with trouble come here to post about it.

There are some nice security updates/features in Mountain Lion over Snow Leopard also. If you are at all concerned about locking down your machine you should upgrade.

I have been here on the forums (in one form or another) through many releases of OSX.

Personally, I have never seen so many threads/issues than I have with Mountain Lion. Apple's "rush" to release a new OS every year now is probably how it's going to be though. (A supplemental release? 2 weeks after an update? Seriously?)

I'm staying with SL until such time as my mac dies.

To the OP:

I have the exact same computer. I did the upgrade from 10.7.4 > 10.8.2 about 3 weeks ago.

I was really not that happy with Lion and loved SL

I was actually planning on waiting until I bought a new computer before trying ML but actually it runs really well on my computer. Certainly better than Lion. I can't quite remember what it was like on SL but I think it is comparable from a pure performace perspective.

ML also reverts a couple (although by no means all) of the really annoying changes that Lion made to the UI especially with 10.8.2

Ex: Save as is back (for real). Preview no longer scrolls stupidly slow when you use arrow keys. You can zoom in on pdfs in quick view again. If you use column view in the finder and sort by none (so it looks like SL) and then view by kind (complicated but you will understand if you upgrade) the folders show up at or near the top instead of the bottom. Mission control now lets you ungroup windows so it is more like regular expose.

I also like Notes. And the other main consumer features of ML (Facebook integration, notification center etc.) can be completely ignored if you don't care for them (since you are still on SL I'm assuming you probably don't)

I had one weird issue at work where pluggin the the ethernet cable made the kernel_task process take up a lot of CPU. I never quite figured out what was going on but it seems to have fixed itself (crossing fingers) and I haven't had the problem since. I did do a clean install btw (just how I like to do things). If I had to pick between SL and ML right now I'd stick with ML.

That is a good point and another thing to add to my list of "how to make notes better"

To put it in perspective, Notes offers similar functionality (a simple note-taking app with history of notes built in) to the only other app that I personally found satisfactory which is xpad. A little known app that just miraculously happens to work through Leopard, SL, Lion and ML even though it crashes sometimes. It hasn't been updated since I installed it back in 2009...I think development stopped with Tiger.

Of course knowing Apple they will probably kill Notes or change it into something completely different in OS 10.9 so I probably shouldn't get attached...
