I've got an iPad Air 2 running iOS 12.4.1 and I don't know if it worth upgrading to iPadOS 14 performance wise and battery wise

I run iOS 14.0.1 on Air 2 without any issues, but I am not a very demanding user. The major real improvements brought in with iPad OS 14, IMO, are Scribble (if you use some sort of a pencil with it) and automatic AirPods switching (if you use AirPods). Otherwise there are some nice (IMO) tweaks to the UI, but nothing extraordinary. So it all depends on whether you prefer “novelty” to “performance”. I am into “novelty”, so install anything new just for the fun of it.

Stay on it like they always say ain't broken don't upgrade it.....
my iPhone 11 pro still running 13.3 runs like a dream no battery drain problems or app crashes going to run ios 13 forever......

12 is probably the best overall iOS ever.

14 will give you wigits, slowness, and battery degredation.

There are few must have features on iPadOS v13 above, if you don’t need them, just stay on version 12.

Every time I'm amazed how good the Air 2 holds up with new updates and the same is true with iOS14, works just as good and quick as the previous versions.

I'm running 14.0.1 on my Air2 and it's running well except for a few bugs that may or may not get ironed out... It was the same with iOS13, worked well except a few bugs that were never fixed. Overall I'm satisfied with the performance, battery life and new features offered

One of the things to watch out for is the size - mine is only a 16GB one and basically I can't really have any apps or downloads any more, with the system + other I'm at 13.5GB so if you have your iOS12 taking up less than that and are worried about space then worth thinking about.

iOS 14 drain battery substantially on my Air 2. Otherwise it still works very well! I hope 14.3 will improve it but I don’t have any high hope for it.

That’s completely insecure. Even if it didn’t run well, and it does, you shouldn’t be running any computing device with outdated software.

13 was a major crash fest on 13 on all versions even with a clean install. On 14, it hasnt crashed yet in weeks of using it. UNless you want the revamped multi tasking features, I’d stay on 12 as IMO, ran the best.

That being said, 14 runs pretty good enough and I have no issues with it aside from minor bugs like iMessage input lag (which hasnt popped up these days after resetting the keyboard dictionary)

I never had real issues with 13. I think it was buggier at first but just reboot it from time to time.

the options though are update the OS, or toss the iPad and buy something new. Using old software on an internet connected device is just demanding you be compromised.

iOS is so locked down so it's less of an issue. Heck, even the vast majority of androids are doing ok and those lose support after a year or so. OP is savvy enough to ask on macrumors whether they should upgrade so they likely have the common sense to not go on sketchy sites and use adblock for all other sites - let's be honest, a lot of the nasty stuff on legit sites come from ads.
