Should I upgrade my white 24" iMac???

I've been thinking about selling my 6 month old 24" iMac and buying the new iMac.

I live in Toronto, Canada -- keep it in mind as I start to throw around some dollar values.

It really doesn't matter what I paid for my iMac. The only things that matter are what I could reasonably expect to get for it and what it would cost me to buy the new system.

First...how much is a new system. I went to Apple and priced out a very similar computer to mine. 2.4ghz, 2 gb of ram, 500 gb hd, wireless mighty mouse and apple care. It came in at $2395 plus 14% tax or $2730.

Then I looked on Craigslist to see what people are asking for similar systems in Toronto. There were a few on there for about $2000...base systems mostly which seemed a bit optimistic in my opinion.

My computer though, might fetch $2000. I ordered it with every upgrade that I could get 6 months ago. 2.33ghz cpu, 2 gb of ram, 7600Gt GPU, 500 gb hd, wireless keyboard and mouse and Apple Care, which is transferable from what I understand.

I could also throw in Adobe Design Premium CS3 ($2295 retail) and a few other software goodies.

Someone buying my computer would save $730 over new, for a computer that is just as quick as the new ones albeit in a white case. They would also get some great software they might not otherwise be able to afford. And they would get the balance of a 3 year warranty.

I, on the other hand would be spending another $730 to move up to a prettier case and performance that is about the same as what I've got.

Am I crazy to be considering this?

Please hit me between the eyes if you've got an opinion one way or the other.

I wouldn't bother. There isn't a huge difference between the two of them, really. Certainly nothing worth all the hassle of selling and buying.

Seriously. Why would you spend a significant amount of money to change the look of a computer? If your current machine did not offer sufficient performance I could understand it, but from your own words "performance that is about the same as what I've got" rather answers that question. And if you're doing work that taxes your current iMac, you need a Mac Pro, not a ever-so-slightly faster iMac. I do not have the impression that is the case, though.

On the other hand, if you can write the check and never miss the money, then why not? I, personally, would use the money to invest or travel or to buy tickets to a killer concert or play or more music or improving the house or . . .

You see, that's what I was looking for...blammo! Right between the eyes.

I think the answer to your question as to why I would bother upgrading is reasonably plain for me to see: I am shallow. The look of the computer...being the latest and greatest carries some currency for me.

I think that you also brought up a point about usage....am I taxing my current iMac to the limit? The answer to that is: Not even close!

How could you afford to give away two thousand dollar software? If you really don't use it and sold it separately wouldn't you get more money?

You're absolutely correct. If I had paid $2295 for CS3 it would make no sense to give it away with my computer. I will leave it right there and allow you to make the appropriate assumptions.

Hey, thanks for the kudos...that actually means a great deal to me. I was quite happy with it myself. I thought it highly appropriate, measured and just uncommon enough that the fella that inspired the comment might have had to suffer the indignity of "looking it up".

As for the new 24" iMac I think I have it out of my system. The comments that I received on this thread gave me the perspective I needed to see that I don't really need the new iMac. I will limp along with my lily white 24"er and take the money I save to get myself the new iPod Touch 16 gb. That thing is beautiful!
