Take a Time Machine backup first.

Copy the installer file to a USB and/or make a bootable USB installer with DiskmakerX.

If you hit problems be prepared to carry out a fresh install over the upgrade.

If still problems be prepared to revert or start over.

Be prepared for a faultless install and no problems afterwards - my 4 were like that :)

Before you upgrade, use System Information to take a note of the boot ROM version. Just in case you later decide to install something less than Yosemite; a firmware downgrade may be required.

Similarly, set aside the installers for Mountain Lion and Mavericks. Having the installers readily available – in addition to your backups of Mountain Lion – is a convenience that you might later appreciate.
