I have a 2 generation old iPod nano, the one before the fat one. I'm considering getting the iPod Touch but I'm trying to justify the purchase to myself. Do you have to pay anything to go online with it or is it as long as you're in the vicinity of a wireless network you'll get online? Will the sound quality be better than a couple year old iPod nano? Has anyone upgraded from a nano that was still functioning? Sorry but I guess I'm looking for some reasons to go for it!

You don't need to make any extra purchases for wifi to work on the iPod touch. I haven't noticed a difference in sound quality between most iPods, I think it depends more on what headphones you have. I upgraded to my iPod touch from the iPod Video, and it still had some functionality, but the battery life was rapidly decreasing. You probably don't need so much space, since you own an old nano, which had barely any capacity, so the touch will probably suit your needs. For me, using the touch is a different experience than using any other iPod. The wifi works great, and there are hundreds of great apps availible. I really enjoy my iPod touch, hopefully you will to. Good luck!

I upgraded from a still working second generation iPod nano (best iPod ever) and I really liked the touch. Using the internet is free since you're just connecting to WiFi. There's no difference in sound quality. And if you can afford it I would recommend holding onto your iPod nano even after you get the touch; those second generation nanos are quality MP3 players.

i also upgraded to a Touch from a Video because of battery problems. the battery on the Touch lasts a solid amount of time, granted i don't use Safari too much but i still use wifi a lot on it.

and i agree about capacity, the OP should be fine if he's going from a Nano to a Touch.

good luck!

If you can buy the Touch, go for it. It is an awesome device -- so much more than any of the other iPods, especially if you have wi-fi in your home.

I upgraded from a 2G nano to an 1G touch last year. The touch is a great little device, especially if you're around wi-fi a lot. It can do a lot more than the nano. It's especially useful if you don't carry around your laptop a lot. The ability to check/reply emails, read news or post on MR without lugging around a 5 pounds machine is great.

Bought a video in Feburary 2007 and bought the Touch in December 2007.
