Should I upgrade to i7 Quad core imac

The new iMac has me interested but help me decide if I should take the plunge or not..

I currently have the 3Ghz Quad mac Pro (original release ) with 7 Gbs ram but I'm considering buying the new 27" 2.8GHz Quad Core i7 iMac, with 4 Gb ram from apple and add a further 4 or 8 from crucial later.

The Mac Pro has become noisy over the months and it does kick out a fair bit of heat. I could also do with the extra desk space the iMac allows. I'm aware of the lack of upgrade path for the iMac but my original Mac Pro I doesn't have much upgrade available as apple don't seem to support it any more and you cannot upgrade the video card.

Speedwise what do you think?

I dont want to jump on your thread, but I am in the same predicament.
I have an octo 2.8 mac pro and am liking the looks of the new imac with the higher res (I currently have a 24" acd).
I have 16gb ram (it was cheap) and all bays have 1tb drives.
I mainly use itunes, iphoto and imovie so would like to maybe go back to an imac and purchase a drobo.

am interested to hear peoples opinions on this as I am tempted at selling my pro.

Hey Tony,

Your best bet is to just go ahead and get the i7 upgrade, at least thats what I am going to do. I plan on keeping my iMac for around 2 years, and getting the upgrade will keep me a little more future proof. Once more apps begin to support the 8 virtual cores, you will experience a noticeable performance boost. It may not be worth it right now, but down the road...you will be glad you made the upgrade when you did.

That is my two cents anyway.

On another note, lets say I want to upgrade and get a new Mac in 2 years; the good thing about the new iMac (27 in model) is I can still use it as an additional monitor. That feature alone is worth my purchase.

Blimey, wish I could afford to upgrade a top of the line iMac every two years. I reckon the Core i7 processor will still be finding its stride in eighteen months time.
