hi, so i have the iphone 3g. i got it on prepaid in australia, so i dont need to worry about old plans. i was thinking of going on a 24 month, or a 12 month, plan with optus, but i know that a new iphone will be coming out next year. we are nearly in november so an update would not be that long away, right? can someone please tell me if i should wait till then or should i go get the 3gs now?
are the predicted features in the 4g iphone that good? what are they? what could they improve that apple wouldn't pass down in a software update?

my current iphone is starting to die a slow death. it seams to of gotten slower, i am running out of space on my phone (so i would get 32 gb) and there is a big crack in the back of my phone now, which seams to have grown.. having said all this, my iphone could survive till next year.

so upgrade or not upgrade to iphone 3gs, or even another phone that you would recommend. thanks heaps.

I've just been there/done that, so my advice would be that it depends on your priorities.

Good stuff about 3GS - faster, esp browsing, non-smudge screen works well, video is nice, compass ditto.

And for >50 somethings. ability to zoom screen, ie check SMS when on bike without stopping to extract glasses from rucksack, is a big plus.

There's no bad stuff. But it does leave you wondering "couldn't they have done most of this in software?".

I'm happy to have upgraded, but then I like to have the latest toys. The problem about waiting for the next gen is that nobody has a clue what the landscape will look like next summer, and perhaps by then there'll be a slew of Android phones to make the choice even harder.

My current contract on a 3G expires this xmas.
But by that time it'll only be 6 months to a refresh, so I'll likely wait. Furthermore, the iPhone is coming to various UK networks next year, so who knows what prices will do.
And Vodafone (will get iPhone) >> O2 (have got iPhone) so I may shift.

Then successor to the 3GS (which should be a relatively minor upgrade compared to 3G->3GS) won't be out until June. We're still only just over 4 months into the product cycle for the 3GS. I wouldn't start hesitating to upgrade until January at the earliest.

Well

See all the other threads like yours and if you can wait wait see what June brings. If not get the 3GS. Personly I love mine. But the choice is yours!

chrisp92, regarding the crack in the back:

If the phone is under warranty and the crack in the plastic originates from the dock connector, you are eligible for a free replacement (for the same model phone). Visit your Australia Apple Store or call Apple to set up the replacement.
