I have a late 2015 MBPr with El Capitan (which I have been satisfied with). I have been considering upgrading to Sierra, but looking at the threads being posted, there seems to be quite a bit of issues and concerns stated. Since this is just a personal use laptop with some photography work, should I upgrade or just continue to wait until the bugs and nuances are ironed out? From what I am seeing, Apple does not seem to be too excited about resolving concerns being expressed, or am I just not seeing the big picture?

The drive is slightly different.
For iCloud which includes Notes, Calendar, Reminders etc those are constantly synced across devices.
The drive works for documents and items produce in the productivity apps, Pages, Numbers etc. With Sierra they included a new option, that can be turned off, that takes all of your desktop documents, documents folder and the "Drive" and syncs those.
That quickly puts people past the 5Gb free, so its good for apple. There are very few of my Documents folder and desktop that I want on my iPhone or iPad so I have the "Drive" turned off and manually upload files to the iCloud.com so that I can through the "Drive APP" on my iPhone get the few documents I need that way.
Just a caution, if you have Drive turned on and access a document from your iPhone and delete said document, then it is gone from all devices, I wish Apple let us designate a master source and use as a back up, but that is not how they presented iCloud drive to be used. I don't run Apple, so I guess I'm fine with it ... ;-)

Based on the comments here and elsewhere I have been reading, I think I am very happy to stay with El Capitan. Sound like Sierra has too many issues and forces too much to the cloud which then ends up being an expense that never existed with El Capitan. So much for progress.
Sierra does not force anything to the cloud. There is no additional expense unless you choose to do so.
One thing that confuses some people is that iCloud Drive is a only feature within iCloud, along with other features like Notes, Safari, KeyChain, Photos, etc. To make things more confusing is the ability to choose what you want in iCloud Drive. The basic iCloud Drive lets you selectively store documents to enable sharing between various systems. The big change occurs when the Desktop & Documents Folders option is enabled.
For most people, unless they want Siri or some other minor change, there is no need to move from El Capitan.
Personally, I like playing with new things so I moved even though I never use Siri or emoji. Or need Desktop and Documents in the cloud.

Currently on mavericks (really comfortable with it) and thinking of upgrading since my design/photo applications no longer support 10.9. And I didn't purchase/download El Capitan. Just wondering, should i go through the trouble to get a copy of El capitan or just jump straight to Sierra.
Any advice?

Is this when I repost that article about Sierra enabling optimized storage BY DEFAULT despite specifically choosing not to use it for Documents and Desktop and the writer's computer becoming completely unusable?
When I installed Sierra on my main computer, I immediately noticed something odd was going on. Nothing a trusty Time Machine restore couldn't fix, I think. But I was shocked to follow that article's advice and discover that, indeed, Optimize Storage in iCloud options switched itself on without asking me. And it's not like I needed more free space or anything.
I am staying on El Capitan as long as it receives security updates and I hope Sierra 10.12.6 or so stops doing stuff like this.
It appears that any recently used files are uploaded to the cloud while all the old ones remain on your hd. I don't understand about if I discontinue the service, that my files are now on iCloud when it seemed that only the most recent ones used were only supposed to be there.
I think it depends on your hardware. I own a 2011 Macbook pro and 10.11 runs far better on it than 10.12.
