I have installed Yosemite on a separate partition. Now Yosemite wants to backup to the same hard drive that I use for my Mavericks time machine backup.

If I allow that will I lose the ability to restore my files to my Mavericks partition..... should the need arise?

Overwrite

Bt will I over write the files should i wish to return back to Mavericks?

no, Time Machine keeps backs up from day or even hours separate so you can pick what you want to restore

Maybe. As long as you have the disk space to gold both, TM will keep versions of everything (including the OS) so you can restore back in time. But if your backup disk starts to get full TM will purge off older data and that could include the old OS version. If it was me, just to be safe, I would set as aside the Mavericks backup and use another disk with Yosemite.

Also, you are still on a beta OS, so who knows what TM will do.
