Hi all, i am new here. my question is if i should wait or not to buy a 27" i7 imac until all the bugs are worked out? if so then how long should i wait? With being in college i don't have the time and money to waste on lemon imacs. I just sold my MBP core 2 duo for 1500 and going to use my student discount and step up to an imac for my graphic design major. any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure if waiting will really do a whole lot for you. By the time any bugs have been worked out, there will be a new revision. If you are worried a lot about that, you could go with a refurb i7, which would have been inspected personally. That would be pretty well guaranteed to be without bugs.

they should be fine, like i am sure you will here the issues here are overblown. I had to return a few but the store is always really helpful. they have i7s in store if you have one near by as well. Also if you get it in the next few days you can still get a free ipod!

Plus the same thing happened with my macbook, i waited forever and once i bought a few months later they come out with i7's. i feel like if i buy now they will come out with better iSights, usb 3.0, eSata, and all that stuff. Maybe a trip to the apple store will loosen my decision =]

Apple is like a cult. Once your in the store, you WILL buy something, it's like a religious experience... Or so I hear!

I'm sure that you'll feel more comfortable once you go in. These monitors are beast in person, enjoy your purchase!!! :apple:

Don't wait. Buy the iMac before the back-to-school promo is over & get a free iPod touch.

good points, if i wait until after september 1st when the new ipod touch comes out do you think i will be able to get that one?

Nope. The back to school promo is only for the current stock of iPods. Believe me, my ex and I tried it a few years ago after Apple announced the 2nd gen iPod nano and they said no dice.

the bugs that a small number of people are experiencing will probably not effect you. I would ignore the percentages that are shown in the forums on returns, and issues. people that experience problems are more likely to complain than people that got perfect machines (like me, mine is perfect).
what i did was purchase in store once i found out that they had the iMac i7 available and that they would upgrade the 4GB to 8GB, . . . the next day i ordered 8 more GB of Ram and installed them myself. if you purchase in the store it will be a lot easier to deal with returns if there is an issue.
the 27" with 16GB is just mad crazy cool!!! as i mentioned before too, no problems, . . . machine is quiet, no dead pixels, no yellow tinting, no dust under the glass, no fading, just perfect and beautiful.
do it, do it now!!
lol

Definitely go for it if a local apple retail store is near by and carries the config you want - at least potential returns will be easy. My BTO 21" arrived on Tuesday with yellow tint and I'm in the process of returning. As convenient as it is to do so via FedEx and pre-paid labels, etc. it still took 2 calls in to Apple and over an hour on the phone.

There's lots of discussion of what is factual vs. guesstimates on the likelihood of iMac issues. Simply put, the fact is that yellow tint was a recognized problem and continues to be an issue. I knew that fact and lo-and-behold my iMac had that problem. To me it was worth the roll of the dice - and still is. We'll see how my patience is after #2 arrive

i'm somewhat having the same issue, though i'm maybe another month or 2 away from having enough cash saved up to pull the trigger. i have a 17" iMac G5 and it has been an absolutely amazing machine. it's still in perfect condition, and the only upgrade i made to it in 4 years has been to go from 2 to 4 GBs of RAM.

i'm just ready for a upgraded and faster machine with more storage and a bigger screen for graphic and web design. still, all these issues i read about here are quite scary, especially since my current machine has been flawless for years.

I am extremely happy with my iMac i7. Not one problem and I got a free iPod Touch AND printer!! Can't beat that!! ;)

What bugs? Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones. I picked up my iMac i7 27" 2 weeks ago and my 13" MBP 3 weeks ago and have had none of the problems alot of other seem to be having.
I'm new to Mac (lovin it too) and this forum too, and it seems to me that once someone finds the smallest of issue (picking fly sh** out of pepper) everyone jumps on the band wagon and make a huge deal out of it. Granted, some of the issues are valid concerns and we pay alot of cabbage for these puters, but come on, "my hard drive makes noise". I been playin with puters for years and I have never head an absolute silent mechanical drive. The fan on my UPS, that sits on the floor under my desk, is louder than the faint noise I hear from the iMac hard drive sitting directly in front of me.
Anyway, don't mean to be a nag, but there are more complaints than praise for Mac on this forum as well as "I ordered my Mac today", I got the tracking #", "I wonder where the package is (it left the shipping point 10 mins. ago)", "I got my Mac today", "I'm opening the box", "I'm plugging it in", "I'm powering it up, oh sh** there's a microscopic mark on it should I return it?"posts. I'd be nice if there were more post like "here's a trick or a tip that I learned" or "I found this killer Mac app", etc.
Bottom line, don't wait. These puters are awesome. Nowadays, the minute you buy what you think is the latest and greatest, it'll be old news the minute you walk out the door with your new puter.

Please don't burn me as this is just my $.02 worth.

Ha Ha, . . . nice post, right there with ya

I'll go on the list of why wait also. My i7 is absolutely flawless, best machine I have ever owned in the last 20 years.

Almost certain that the new iPod Touch will be excluded from the promo. You can wait until next Wed to find out for sure before making your mac purchase.
