Should I worry about SMART status of drive Temps.

So, most of my drives are less than 2 years old but I decided to check the SMART status using TechTools Pro and a few others. They all passed, but I have a Seagate 1TB drive that's less than a year old, and the "Internal Temperature Changes" graph is already about half-way up the scale and that drive reports low "Seek Error Rate" & "Raw Read Error Rate".

My other drives have barley moved off of the ø mark, and have ø in all other areas. I even have 2 old 250GB Hitachi drives that have zeros all the way through except that they show high count on hours used (1/2 way through life expectancy).

Should I worry about replacing the Barracuda drive soon.

I too have a Barracuda drive. You did not indicate if it was internal in a sled or external in an enclosure. I use mine externally in an enclosure with a cooling fan.

I have attached a current report run during a backup for reference. Unless the temperatures are really high, I would not be too concerned. Especially if you are not seeing any errors on the drive.

If you are still concerned, you could always use the drive in an enclosure with a cooling fan.

It's an internal drive. It also had seek and read errors. The temperature readings by themselves wouldn't alarm me, but seeing the errors as compared to the other drives is unsettling. I have many other drives (including Seagate) that are in external enclosures but SMART status can't be checked on USB.

There is a driver at the lower right of this page that will add support for SMART over USB.

Is that seek /read error rate increasing over time? If so, I would dump the drive.

I've not seen an increase but I'll keep an eye on it. Do you suppose those errors are temp. related?
