It's impossible not to notice when my MacBook begins to run anything more intensive than basic web surfing or text editing because the internal fans whir up to an extremely high speed and volume.

Is there something wrong with my new MacBook, or is this a general annoyance everyone has to live with?

Mine is dead silent unless I'm doing something intense. You can hear the fans churning when it's doing something like processing video. Even so, it's not nearly as loud as some of my classmates PC laptops. Macbooks are still quiet (comparitively) machines, regardless of CPU/graphics load.
