I am stunned that my new Macbookpro cant play HD video content!

I want to know is there something wrong with my Macbookpro? I plan to take it to a Genius bar.

Its the 1.83 model with 128 megs of vram and 2 gigs of ram.
Would love to hear others experiences with this.

I also couldnt play HD content from the Redrock M2 site.

What do you mean by "not play"? Does it start to play and you get stuttering or dropped frames - ie. a slideshow effect, or does it not launch at all?

If you are talking about the download on that page, that's a wmv. They don't play on Macs without third party software.

Hmm... might be the time of day, but the download from that site has stopped responding entirely, so I can't even test it.

That said, it's a WMV file, so you're going to need a WMV player or codec to play it. Microsoft's Mac Windows Media Player is quite literally dead, and they have replaced it with a free copy of the much better 3rd party QuickTime codec from Flip4Mac. That codec, however, isn't quite ready for the Intel Macs yet (it's in a closed beta, so I expect soon), leaving you with two options: The so-so Popwire codec for Quicktime, which handles some files, and the free VLC video player, which handles some others.

However... being that the file in question is in WMV format and hi-def resolution, I'm assuming it uses the WMV 9 HD codec. And, based on some other similar resolution sample files using that codec I downloaded elsewhere, I don't believe that Popwire or VLC support that codec. I have no idea whether Flip4Mac does or not--I'll test the current PPC version on my desktop at some point if nobody else chimes in with an answer.

Therefore, it's not going to play, period, until Flip4Mac or somebody else ships a codec that supports WMV 9 HD. That's not Apple's fault--they've got a very good (arguably, *better*) HD codec of their own in the more open h.264 standard, and the new Intel Macs are fast enough to support hi-def video playback in it (or any other supported codec--say, XviD, for example, or MPEG)

what are you using to play it? i used flip4mac on my macbook (the beta version) and it ran fine, if your running VLC it's going through rossetta so will be slow as ****

To the original poster: Are you complaining that it doesn't work at all, or that it was playing badly? I'm not sure what RedrockM2 site you were referring to, but if it was this page:

That IMAX underwater experience thing....absolutely incredible.

thanks to all for the replys.

To further clarify the question, I was playing the stated WMV on Windows Media Player 9#..

It starts to play and stutters and jumps to various frames.

So it is playing and NOT at the same time.

Not playing in a manner in which you can watch the entire movie in flowing manner.

When i play the lower version the medium download, then it plays fine.
Which led me to believe that it was the HD that isnt playable.

Is it Rosetta that is slowing it down?

As for Flip4mac, it isnt Intel/Mac ready!

the beta is and works great for me, it's attainable through less than legal means unless you signed up for the beta version.
