I stopped into Compusa during lunch to see if I could find any other faulty ALU 24" imac screens. I get in and there's a 24" ALU and 24" white one side by side. At first, I asked the rep if he heard of screen issues and he said, yes, there have been complaints about them. More on that later.
Anyway, I loaded the white-blue-white screen test and sure enough, this ALU imac had the same exact issue as mine did - darker on the right and lighter on the left. The Apple rep also noticed it immediately and said it was "quite bad". I told him this was actually not as bad as some and was just how mine was. The build week of that one was 39.
I then tried the same test on a 24" white imac next to it and the screen was even! It sort of tapered off slightly on the edges, but it was at least even on both sides.
I immediately asked if there were any white imacs in stock. he said only open-box items. I asked about warranties on those and he said that open box items do not have warranties.
Crap, oh well.
I then asked out of curiosity if there were any more 24" alu imacs in stock and he said that they were being "restricted". I asked what it meant and he said that apple is holding back supplies of them right now. It may be due to the screen issue, but he was not sure, though did not rule it out.
Hmmm, this may mean hope for the future. Perhaps apple is finally doing something it.
With that said, he said to call Apple to see if anything can be done over the phone (I doubt it, he agreed too). However, I will also ask if/when the screens are fixed, will apple replace faulty units. I surely hope so. If I cannot get a definite answer on that, mine is going back and being exchanged for a mini in the meantime, as I have a flawless 19" monitor sitting at home. I can always sell the mini down the road and buy a "fixed" imac.
So unfortunate though, as I love the brilliance of the screen, but the unevenness and backlight bleed bugs me.
