I saw this on the cDock HP, in the Blogs section, and the Shrinking Title bars post.
So, finding it interesting, I tried the terminal command shown there to separate the Title bar and the Tool bar (menu icons) to different levels, as was the previous default in Big Sur. To my delight and surprise, this code now makes list view usable again! After someone at Apple decided to scrunch up the list view windows by default so you had to fiddle with the list view window's borders just to see the content EVERY time you opened a new list window. (Who decided to make that change anyway?)
To paraphrase one prominent software developer's response, "A@@le should realize that the macOS users are sentient beings who can actually walk and chew gum at the same time."
Thanks to the developer at the cDock home page for that Enable two layered title and tool bar code!
It is not my code, so see the linked URL above if you need a usable list view (tested in Big Sur (works!) and Monterey - sadly does not work)

I'm using Monterey and I don't really see what's wrong with list view. Works as expected for me.

In Big Sur, the default in a list view window is a window that is scrunched up. You have to drag the border out to the right (fiddle #1) to see everything, and then (fiddle #2) drag the border separating the file names and the next item just to see all of the names. There is just not enough space allocated there. That's two "fiddles" too many.
In Monterey the default list view window is better, not scrunched up, so that's 2 fiddles less!
Actually, I was able to get that "fix" working in Monterey once, but after a reinstall it stopped working.
I am running Monterey via OCLP on a non-supported iMac 15,1, from 2014, so obviously that has something to do with that glitch.
