You can if you really want but it's not necessary.

You're on a Macbook Pro, correct? You don't have to but lately I've gotten into the habit of closing the lid and putting it to sleep, connecting the monitor, then opening the lid to wake it. There's no need to shutdown your computer.

As mentioned no need. I just make sure my monitor is off when i connect/disconnects.
