New iMac 20" Intel Core 2 Duo - computer continues to shut down on its own. Apple advise to load all new software. Still shuts down, any suggestions, any idea what the problem could be. I have an appointment with Apple Genius Bar tomorrow and want to walk in with plenty of back up information.

does it do a real shutdown or power off?

if it is a power off, u should know it is hardware related
if kernel panic, could be either software or hardware.
if real shutdown, if it is not software, then i dont really know, as i think only software can shutdown a computer.

sorry for my dumb ideas

My iMac has been shutting down as well

Found the thread while doing a search on the very same issue. Mine has been shutting down similarly.

Just all of a sudden turns off and then automatically begins to reboot.

Love to know what you've come up with.

Haven't yet contacted Apple.

Hopefully I'll get this out before another shutdown

Taking it in tomorrow.

More and more frequent and the time from shutdown to restart is also longer and longer now. Very bizarre, completely random.

Only had it for 2 months too.

Apple was seemingly at a loss as to what was happening.

I'll inform on the results.

Apple Cant Fix Problem

few weeks ago Apple (Menlo Park, NJ - Carlos, Manager) Store finally gave up trying to fix problem. Twice they attempted to fix the problem. First time they ran diagnostic while I was there and it never shut down. Second, time they ran same diagnostic but for two days. Did not shut down. They updated the firmware and sent me home. Still shutdown on me. I called the manager up frustrated and he told just to bring it in and he'll give me a new one. He believe the logic board might not be good. So my respond is don't give up, continue bringing in the computer until they give you a new one. Whoever you take it to, have them call Carlos Echevarria @ Apple Store, Menlo Park, NJ. Sorry, I misplaced my case #.

Good Luck

Check your Energy Saver scheduling prefs in the System Preferences.

1. Open System Preferences
2. Go to Energy Saver (light bulb icon)
3. Click "Schedule" button in lower right corner.

Sometimes when this gets messed up or set improperly, your system will shutdown or reboot at odd times for no apparent reason. This is the only software control in the system that could be responsible for such a thing. It is also possible that you may have something such as a startup item installed that will be oddly rebooting your system everytime you startup and this loads.

Hope this helps,
-Ward

In the thick of it

Took it to where I purchased it (certifified Apple techs).

They had it for a week. They ran it hard and of course it did not shutdown. The one issue they did confront was getting it to start at all initially, which is a symptom that has become more frequent. The power-on button seems to completely not react at times. They did confirm it was not virus related and that it appears to be hardware, but couldn't help because they couldn't witness the issue.

Anyways, I brought it home, hooked it up, and in less than 5 minutes it shutdown. It continued to do so at random intervals just as before. I thought maybe it could be a power issue on my end somehow (the tech said that these iMacs are more sensitive to power issues than other macs???) Tested the outlets, all fine. Tried different outlets, same at all.

Called back Apple and they advise now to take it to the Apple Store which I do tomorrow evening where they will run the diagnostic in front of me. You can guess the result.

rcmetsmac - I appreciate the thread here and your info. I will inform them of your ordeal and outcome.

Call The Apple Store In Edison

Get them to contact the apple store at the Menlo Park, Edison and talk to Carlos. The exact events played out with me, even with switching the outlets. They finally gave me a new one. Show them your frustration, don't give up!

Are you folks with this shut down problem using an Uninterruptible Power Supply?

please o please o please dont tell me the new intel macs are now suffering the SMU random shutdowns that the G5 iMac's had...ive just replaced my G5 with an Intel...i wont be best pleased..

Go into your error logs, and look for a shutdown cause...it should say =122 for example..

another really bizarre reason that actually is 100% true, is that if you are using a bluetooth mouse, the bluetooth module in your mac and the mouse can have power differences, resulting in your mac shutting down.

My 2nd iMac had this issue....very rare, only found a handfull of poeple on the discussion forums, but its an odd problem thats defo there.

it does sound like the SMU though....and the reason it reboots, is cause you have it set to auto restart after a power failure, check sys prefs

Apple techs did not find any error messages... shut downs were random.

Not using a bluetooth.

Shutdowns only, does not reboot!

Not using an uninterruptible power supply.

Apple techs were even puzzle about what was happening!!

Only solution so far.... GET THEM TO GIVE YOU A NEW ONE!!

Fixed???

Hey,

Just returned from picking up my iMac.

Here's what they did:

Item Number: 922-8188
Description: Cable, DC, Power Supply/SATA/Inverter

Item Number: S1491LL/A
Description: HARDWARE REPAIR-LEVEL 2

It's been up and running for just under an hour now and no problems. That in itself is definitely an improvement.

Time will tell....
