I'd like to know whether it's better or worse to shutdown a computer at the end of the day. Writing in ignorance, I've seen people leave their computers on all the time, and others shutdown whenever they are not on it. What are we supposed to do?

Why?

Anymore, it makes little difference. You will be totally confused by the time all the responses roll in.

It'd be better for the environment to shutdown or put the computer to sleep, but it'll put more stress on the components to shutdown and startup everyday...

I'll let someone else explain the latter part in a better way

Well...I think either Shutdown or Sleep would both be better than leaving it on all the time. Personally, I just Sleep mine unless I am going out of town for a couple of days. I live alone, so most of the time I just use Sleep and don't even log out. When I lived in smaller quarters I would use Shutdown more because the Sleep lights kept me awake too much.

Do not turn the computer off and on all the time.

Electrical components are very intricate pieces of metal. When you turn the power on it causes a sudden increase in temperature which speeds damage to the electrical components. It is much better to put the system to sleep rather than shut it down everyday.

Think of a light bulb, it is much the same principle.
