What's the shutter life of a Canon 400D? I know that the more expensive Canons are rated at 100,000 or 200,000 cycles. Anyone know what to expect with a 400D?

So, I have 3439 pictures taken since 9/30. Figure I deleted several hundred. That's about 7000 a year--and I'm definitely picking up the pace. Sounds OK for my usage. If I can go 10 years replacing the shutter once, I'll be happy.

And since we are on the topic, do shutters suddenly stop working or does their performance degrade over time, until they are unusable?

Am close to 7000 cycles on my 5 month old 400D, so i'll be happy if the shutter lasts me 5 years.

usually on or around the 100,000th click, the shutter explodes in an amazing pyrotechnic display. It's quite a sight.:p

Wait a minute, you mean they are actually programmed to self-destruct on a specific cycle number? That's so cool, i can't wait for my first shutter bang! :D

A friend of mine recently repaired his Nikon D100. The shutter would work about half the time and get stuck, making a noticeable and slightly painful noise the other half of the time. (or maybe it was 70/30, or whatever, but you get the idea.)

That's probably one of several ways it can go.

On a serious note, my old Elan started taking pictures with the shutter only half open. It was sad. :( Sometimes it wouldn't open at all.
