Well I came home today to find out my dad shut down my iBook, and then i turned it on about an hour later. Isnt that bad for a computer to be shut down and turned back on so quickly? What could it possibly do?

I think you'll be fine. Shutting down a computer then turning it back on an hour later is like a restart, just longer :D

If the computer was turned off and on every five minutes in a cold room for several weeks or months straight, perhaps it would be a problem. Those few moments where the electronics quickly heat up from room temperature to operating temperature put the most stress on components, but they're made to be turned on and off every once in awhile. Don't worry about it so much ;)

Besides, since it sounds like you don't turn your iBook off, you probably do put it to sleep sometimes, right? Sleep and shutdown have the same general effect on the heating/cooling of the electronics, as the only thing kept alive in sleep mode is the RAM.

True. That being said, putting your Mac to sleep is preferrable to shutting it down every night.

An hour? Not a problem.

I'm old school. Back in the day, they used to say that you should wait at least 5 seconds after turning off a computer before turning it on again.

Yea thats been the case, I sleep it every night and shut it down rarely, and restart when necessary (once a month usually), so I kinda freaked when he did that. :p
