Hey All,

I searched for this and haven't been able to fine any info about it. Anyways, I'm bringing my Core Duo Macbook 2.0 ghz in tomorrow morning to get it repaired after two logic board replacements (the first was bad). Last week, about a month after the replacements, my computer stopped going to sleep when I shut the lid. I have not knowingly installed any program to make this happen and I don't use peripherals. Not only will it not go to sleep when I shut the lid because the lid is shut, it will stay on!!!! ignoring the energy saving preferences that tell it to go to sleep in 15 minutes. If I don't shut the lid, it does that just fine. Having the computer not sleep is very annoying, and I don't know why it won't.

To fix the problem I have
Looked through all my prefs and programs for a culprit
Reset the PRAM/NVRAM
Reset the SMC
Reinstalled the operating system (Archive and Install)

Did I miss anything? Anybody else have this? It seems like it's a hardware issue, but if it might be fixed with out bringing it in that would be great.

I know there's a piece of software called Insomnia that can do this, and that alone means it can be toggled via software. Of course, to my knowledge it uses a kext to do so.

But, considering this has only resulted after a change of hardware, my best guess, like yours, is that it is indeed hardware related. That I cannot help you with, sorry.

The easiest way to diagnose if it is InsomniaX is to just reboot the machine, Insomnia is only loaded from InsomniaX for that session, and reboots will require loading again.

Another way to test for it is enter this in the terminal, if it brings up nothing then it is not loaded:

kextstat | grep insomnia

Nope, I have no external peripherals and Bluetooth is turned off. I also have never used that InsomniaX program for anything. The computer is at my local repair shop now; otherwise, I would maybe have downloaded it and tried to enable it and then disable it? I'm curious as to what the final culprit will be.

Any updates on your situation?

I just purchased a MacBook today and have the same problem. The computer will only go to sleep manually--closing the lid or waiting for it to automatically sleep based on power settings will not work. I tried all the things referenced in the first post and thus plan on bringing it back to the Apple Store tomorrow for either repair or replacement.

update: I brought it back to the Apple Store, the Genius confirmed the problem and gave me a new one, which works fine.

Sorry about the late update. The Apple people said that the "sleep cord" had come disconnected. Not exactly sure what that means but it is fixed now. I'm happy they replaced yours Zolk!
