EDIT : I now have both headsets re-named and working 100%

I have two indentical branded ( but different coloured Black & Pink) Bluetooth headsets.
Mavericks 10.9.5 has always allowed me to rename these headsets which out of sheer laziness .. I have always renamed them "Black" & "Pink".

Since I upgraded to Sierra 10.12.6 RENAMING Bluetooth devices no longer works for me at least with my Vers. 4.0 dongle. Both headsets show up with two identical model numbers - no way to tell them apart aside from using Bluetooth Explorer

I also has a fresh install of Mavericks 10.9.5 on a spinner HD on my cMP with the above headsets paired, working & re-named as Black & Pink.

Out of curiosity I did the following.

Copied from the Mavericks . ..

1. Mavericks/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist

and again from Mavericks . .. .

2. Mavericks/Users/me/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.Bluetooth.E7B38C74-F5E6-59ED-9F99-46AFFBB85329.plist

. .. to the same locations in Sierra 10.12.6.

Voila ! :p The "Black" headset shows up as "having been renamed "Black" and is working 100%

More Voila !

When I returned home today, booted up Sierra 10.12.6 and . . . . .

( I also have my 14 year old Canon A3 format B&W laser printer working perfectly too thanks to Terminal ! )

Why on earth does renaming work flawlessly in Mav. 10.9.5 yet not in Sierra 10.12.6 ?

Hope this helps anyone in the same situation as I was in. When I Googled about this I saw quite a few posts on various forums regarding this Renaming problem.

EDIT : Of course, this solution assumes that you have Mavericks 10.9.5 or another higher OS X where RENAMING is working.

After a bit more experimentation I have discovered that only the Mavericks Library/Preferences/Bluetooth.plist needs to be copied from my Mavericks 10.9.5 installation.

Assuming you have a Mav 109.5 installation somewhere.

1. Boot into Mavericks 10.9.5

2. Pair your devices & copy the " Library/Preferences/Bluetooth.plist " from Mav, to a USB stick or directly somewhere
on your Sierra 10.12.6 installation

3. Quit Mavericks

4. Boot into Sierra 10.12.6

5. Delete Sierra's "Library/Preferences/Bluetooth.plist " ( input your password )

6. Copy the Mavericks " Library/Preferences/Bluetooth.plist " to the same location in Sierra.

7. Restart Sierra.

NOTE : Your Mav. paired devices "may" pop up with the correct renamed names .. or . . .try pairing them
again in Sierra - my re-named names then appeared.

OFF TOPIC :

i have THREE of the same make SANWA Bluetooth headsets ( 3 Pink models which seem to have a shorter battery life )
and ONE of the Black model which really does seem more robust than the Pink models - they all show up with the same
model number . . .

Anyway . .. I had a 2000 MaH battery lying around that I've never used so just for a lark I hooked it up to one of the
Pink models ( I colored the right speaker BLACK and when I paired this unit in Mavericks I renamed it Black Pink ).

It's now happily paired in Sierra 10.12.6 and has been outputting good audio for more than 12 hours so far.

Last year his unit seemed to experienced a failed component and although it is up and running now i cannot
adjust the audio levels and to turn it off I connect it to the USB cable charger. Still the current audio level is quite adequate .. .rescued from the garbage bin !

Of course the "Black Pink" unit is for when I'm alone in the house and it looks rough as guts- I used the Japanese version of Araldite but it's solidly glued to the right speaker cover.

It;sa shame I can't change the thread title to . .. ." 100% solved " .. is there a way to do this ?

Did a half hearted test of the headset with the 20MaH battery attached . . got around18 hours uninterrupted.
This unit seemed to have been damaged before connecting the battery so i cannot increase the audio levels .. YET !
I'm playing around with button combinations at powerup to maybe be able to reset it. Learned a lot already.
