I installed Sierra yesterday with no problems. Before going to bed I plugged the computer in to charge overnight, as I do every night. I ended up falling asleep with the computer still on, and when I woke up it was completely dead. No response when I tried to wake it up, and no response from the power key. It was very warm. I left it connected to power the rest of the night, and this morning it was in the same state. It was also still very warm. I disconnected from power and performed an SMC reset (Shift-Control-Option-Power, then Power again), and that rebooted the computer. It's running a bit sluggish, and the battery is draining very fast (already down to 95% and it's only been on for about 15 minutes). It's still a bit warm, though not as warm as it was when connected to power. It also keeps losing connection to Gmail / Gchat which I have open in another tab in Safari.

Has anyone experienced similar issues? Obviously Sierra will need to index for a while, but it definitely shouldn't brick the computer and require a reset.

Sounds like you may have some utility or something running that is not compatible with Sierra.

Open Activity Monitor and go to the CPU tab and sort by %CPU. Is there anything there using a high percentage of CPU cycles?

Also, reboot to safe mode by holding the shift key at boot. That will stop all third party launch and startup items from running. If that fixes it, then use the app http://etrecheck.com to show a list of all launch items. The Etrecheck report is anonymized, so you can post it here for us to take a look if you want.

Nothing appears to be hogging the CPU. I did do a safe mode reboot, then rebooted again normally and ran EtreCheck. I selected No Problem - Just Checking since none of the other options really matched the issue I'm having. The report is below. Also the battery still seems to be dropping rather quickly but the chassis isn't hot anymore.

EtreCheck version: 3.0.5 (309)

I should have been more clear on the safe mode boot. Start in safe mode, then let it run or use it for a while and see if the issue goes away. I did not mean just a quick safe mode boot then back to regular mode. The idea is if safe mode fixes it, then we know it is a launch or startup item causing the problem.

Although, in the EtreCheck report you have very few third party items running and I'm not seeing anything wrong. I do see a Dock crash log from yesterday.

Is everything okay now?

The battery still seems to be draining too quickly and I'm getting some lag here and there, definitely more than I ever saw with El Capitan. But those could be related to Sierra still indexing files. I had massive lag in Safe Mode (though that's maybe to be expected).

It's not just Finder indexing, Photos also has photoanalysisd churning through all of your photos (if any) to categorise them. My Mac has been doing that for the last 5 hours, ever since I installed Sierra.

I put the computer to sleep and charged it back up to 100%, and that appears to have resolved the battery drain issue. No further overheating issues either. Still getting a bit of lag here and there.

My iMac has been doing that for the last six days :) it takes time to index and recognize 35k photos.

And yes, this is not what bricked means. Actual bricking (=unrecoverable hardware fault brought on by software) is extremely rare.
