Sierra has made external hard drives disappear

I have two external hard drives connected to my iMac. Since installing Sierra neither of them are visible on the desktop. Anyone have any ideas? All my TimeMachine backups are on one of them. Am scared to revert back to El Capitan in case iMac still won't recognise hard drive and not let me restore from time machine backup. Both external drives worked fine with El Capitan...

you checked under Finder>Preferences>General? otherwise: reboot. or try resetting the SMC:

1. Did you check the Finder Preferences (still on OS X 10.10.5)?

2. Did you check with the Disk Utility app that your 2 disks are connected?
