I downloaded it, but by the time I did I had only 4Gb free on this MBA, so it fell over when it tried to install.

I've deleted a whole pile of images, but unsure how much space I'll need to free up so it won't fall over when I try to install again - anyone know?

You need a minimum of 10% free for the system to use. You also need room to add files for future growth.

First empty the downloads folder.
Open iTunes > Preferences > Devices > do you see backups you can delete?
Open Photos and Empty the Trash in Photos.
Check iTunes > Media folder for podcasts, moves etc you can delete
Empty the Trash

When you have the space, download OmniDiskSweeper to help identify large files.
