I had Sierra installed as a Beta, and also installed the GM version of Sierra when it was available. Oddly, while Mac OS Sierra showed in my purchase list before it became available to everyone, it doesn't show any more. According to the MAS, I've never "bought" Sierra. I posted a bit ago asking others if that was their experience too; and, everyone said "yes".

Here's why, I think, Sierra is different.

By making the App a "downloadable" app vs. a "Free" app, Apple no longer requires an active MAS account to download the latest MacOS. Also, by disallowing "purchases" of MacOS Sierra, re-installing Sierra on a computer that you're selling (for example), no longer requires proving you've purchased a free upgrade.

Also, by having Sierra as a downloadable (vs buy for free) app, there's no ability to leave a rating and/or reviews. Apple, I believe, wants Sierra to be downloaded by anyone/everyone, and for those people who are clueless and just like to bitch in feedback areas, there's no place to do so.

Seems like an interesting approach to Mac updates. It's really making the upgrade much closer to a update by dropping the bar to acquire the latest version of MacOS.

No clue. Maybe you won't be able to download old versions any longer....

thats defiantly a shame. especially if they change compatibility the old version should always be available in some way especially if you have downloaded it in the past. i sure hope they revert it back to a pay for free appinstead of the way they have it. i like to have all my installers available from the mac app store. guys we just gott aback it up if we don't want to loose it b4 10.13 comes out

I'm curious what will happen to Sierra once High Sierra is available since it's not in our purchase history. Will it be gone forever? I saved the Install macOS Sierra.app and hope it will work if I decide to use it a couple years down the road...

I guess we'll find out soon, eh?

Today I used App Store 2.3 (652) in pre-release build 17A360a of Mac OS X 10.13 to download the installer for 10.12.6.

Post-download, it's not listed as a purchase.

Maybe there'll be more focus on using Recovery OS, in lieu of App Store, to download whatever Apple prefers for its hardware.

URLs such as these still present App Store information for Sierra (in Firefox):

- https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/macos-sierra/id1127487414?mt=12

– so maybe the App Store interface to downloading Sierra will remain available, but obscure.
