Hello, I'm new here, this is my first post. I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro 13, but I upgraded the ram to 16gb. I have El capitan now, but what do you say? do I upgrade to Sierra or it'll only make it slower.

PS I'm plaining on upgrading to a SSD

That is a loaded question. It comes down to needs and desires. If there are features in 10.12 you want, then upgrade. If you are happy with 10.11, stick with it.

Or it could be you are being driven by software requirements that demand a certain level of OS. Then follow that path.

PRACTICALLY, there are not a huge number of difference between Sierra and El Capitan. Almost no one here uses Siri, and while there are some security increases, the new file system hasn't come online yet. I have a late 2013 15 inch i7 MBP running Sierra and a 2011 iMac running El Capitan, and both seem identical to me

Sierra. There's no reason not to use the latest OS. I have it installed on an aging 2010 13" MacBook Pro and it's noticeably faster than El Capitan. You should upgrade to the SSD right away. It's going to be a night and day difference in terms of speed. And with the advent of the new Apple File System (which has finally appeared in the latest version of iOS), it will be geared more toward taking advantage of flash storage, which is also evidence that Apple will be phasing out HDDs entirely.

Sierra is not going to make your Mac slower. But that SSD will make your Mac a LOT faster, regardless of which OS you choose to go with. Hopefully AFS will be making its debut in the next OS release from Apple.

No choice with my systems. They are old enough that El Capitan is what they can take.
